I'm part of the team that is reopening Metrolina Speedway and we want to celebrate the track's history. I'm looking for any information, memorabilia and photos of the track & drivers who raced there. Here's you chance to be part of history.

Hi Bobby,Sorry, its going to be asphalt. We have a pretty well known promoter whos going to be in charge of it and he recommended we pave it. Did you race there?

Humpy? No I didn't race there. It was paved once before and went back dirt. Pavement has a lot going against it, in addition to expense and bland racing, pavement has that inherent "NASCAR association". The modern NASCAR fan (and they are a diminishing breed) has little if any passion for the sport..........the passionate grassroots racing fans have all gone back to the dirt tracks. Passion is what makes folks race and watch racing.

It was paved from '74 thru '77 when Ned Jarrett was the promoter there. It went back to dirt in '78. I understand your point about dirt racing and the passion for it. The best NASCAR drivers all honed their skill on dirt and love going back to it on occasion. Had a friend who raced dirt up in the north east. Loved helping out but hated coming home covered in dirt. Most dirt tracks barely survive financially. For us, it would also limit the other types of racing we are going to have there. It will have progressive banking which should make the racing exciting.

Hey there! Glad to see some new light coming back into an area that needs redeveloping. I live in Mooresville and have some photos taken when the NASCAR LMS cars raced there back in the 70's, the Saturday following the World Service Life 300 at Charlotte. I was living in Va back then. I also have a brochure for the Metrolina 500 combination LMS and modified race.

It will have a hard time surviving as an asphalt track. maybe the drifting craze or that other stuff will bring in the necessary revenue. Take a look at Concord and see how many fans are showing up. Southern National is closed. Best of luck, but I will believe all of this when I see it.
