Greg Biffle Lurks In The Shadows
I have heard What is wrong with Roush-Fenway Racing? from the motorsports media in 2010.
Im not sure anything is wrong.
Jimmie Johnson has claimed the previous four NASCAR Cup titles. Each year he has shown strength during the first 26 races. But the teams expertise really shone through during The Chase. The stretch drive during the final 10 events is what has made Team 48, well Team 48.
But not always remembered are summer runs that had observers claiming Hendricks blue and silver champions had lost their mojo. There were race performances that gave critics hope that another crown was not coming to the Chad Knaus-led crew.
Johnson is most remembered for mastering The Chase format and not having to be the best on the road to the final ten countdown. With a goal of just getting there, then delivering a knockout punch when the money is on the line.
Someone else is getting there without much fanfare. Week after week in a races closing stages, in which a late race restart almost seems required, I keep seeing a driver high on the scoreboard and getting little attention. He may like it that way.
Keep an eye on Greg Biffle.
The race telecasts spend plenty of time focusing on the leaders and drivers which a network feels appeal to a mass audience. Solid, non-flashy, drives do not garner a lot of airtime. Biffle consistently puts in that kind of performance.
Not a heavy weekly lap leader or charging three wide through the field Biffle is, simply, there.
As the initial few hundred miles unravel I see The Washington native compete in a manner that blends in with the rest of the field. At halfway he is in the upper half. During the last fuel run he is in a top ten car and looking for more. Then I keep seeing him battling within the top five as the checkered flag is in sight. However he couldnt be described as a closer.
Circumstances have not fallen Biffles way to guide him into victory lane. But several drivers could also lay claim to that same fact. As headline lacking as his season has been, the Roush driver is still fifth in points ahead of some of the major players.
Johnson has demonstrated this same run at times over the past four seasons. Steady, not overpowering, and good enough to figure out how to get into The Chase. We all know who hoisted the shiny hardware in Homestead during recent memory.
Maybe Greg Biffle has figured out his own way to add to his Truck and Nationwide titles, and what better example to follow than Jimmie Johnson?
In an age where the sport is looking for someone to challenge the continuing champ, my gut tells me The Biff is worth keeping an eye on.
Patrick, I wish I shared your hope for Roush Fenway racing. Greg is not the problem for sure. Roush is lost. Just so you know, I'm a big Jack Roush fan and live about 10 miles from his house in Michigan. He's a knowledgeable, friendly, great engine man and leader. The teams have hit a brick wall as far as getting the cars to go. I hope they figure it out to give us Ford fans something to cheer about, but I don't hold out much hope.Pete in Michigan
