Are reaction times a true reflection of driving skill?
I've been around drag racing a long time, and been a racer myself. I'd like to know if there is any real benefit from having reaction timers. I contend that it isn't REALLY just the drivers reaction time being measured, but also the vehicles. If the vehicle pulls the front wheels, the reaction time will suffer. Wheel spin, clutch slippage, spit on the track, so many little factors will affect reaction time. I rode a Pro Gas drag bike, and that thing would leave as hard as anything I've ever seen, but if I started to string a bunch of .00whatever lights together, then I knew I was going home early, because if you live by the tree, you die by the tree. It was inevitable. You can try to slow your leave down, but it just ends up with you leaving late, and you're done anyway. I was running the small drag racing front tire on my bike, and ended up switching to a road racing slick on the front. It gave me more roll out, even though I had to sacrifice a couple of pounds in weight. I see all the "Super" classes using a small sidewall tire these days, just so they look like they're making big speed on top. Who cares? At the end of the day, it only matters if your wallet is fatter, or you got the gold. I'd appreciate any thoughts from anyone else out there. Best of luck to all racers, be careful.
