It seemed fitting that Frank Deiny Jr. Motorsports would get its first dual class wins in the season opener at South Boston Speedway . Justin Johnson backed up his 2009 track championship with a win in the rain shortened late model stock feature and Justin Snow took home the 50 lap limited sportsman affair.

"It was a a very satisfying day" stated Deiny by phone from his shop near Richmond. "Especially from the standpoint that it happened with two different examples of our chassis"

While Snow dominated his race, Johnson led only one lap in his win, taking the lead just before rain stopped the scheduled 75 lapper at lap 64.

The last lap triumph brought back memories of Deiny's first win as a driver at the track in October 1997. Deiny had just recently moved east from his native California. His late dad was a major player in California short track racing in the sixties and even ran a trio of NASCAR Grand National ( now Nextel Cup) races at the now closed Riverside ,California road course. Deiny won features at Old Dominion Speedway, East Carolina Speedway, and Southern National Speedway (Kenly, N.C.) , but it was that first Sobo trophy that put him on the late model stock car map. Deiny was running third behind Phillip Morris and the late Kevin Grubb as the leaders took the white flag. " I backed off a little on that last lap" remarked Deiny. "you could just see that something was gonna happen". Indeed, the last lap was a doozy with Grubb rooting Morris out of the lead in tuns one and two only to have Morris retaliate by ramming the rear of the Grubb machine heading into turn three. The result was that both cars spun into the wall and Deiny skated by for the win. " It was a big deal for me because it was a major race (200 laps) and there was so much prestige in winning at South Boston" Deiny concluded.

Johnson's triumph wasn't quite as dramatic. He bumped with leader C.E. Falk on the last completed lap and went by to claim the victory. Deiny was racing at the UARA late model race in Hickory on the same day (former Nationwide series driver Shane Huffman won there) . " I hear it was a pretty exciting race " he laughed.
