Chargin Charlie Glotzbach ...........one of the greatest old drivers of all time why isn't he honored and remembered
I REMEMBER CHARGIN CHARLIE WHEN I WAS A CHILD, MY PARENTS WOULD TAKE ME TO THE RACES, AS I GREW UP I LOST TOUCH WITH RACING. I WENT OUT WEST AND THE REST IS HISTORY.YET I STILL HEAR PEOPLE TALKING AND TELLING STORIES OF HIM. HOW HE WAS ONE OF THE GREATS WHO SACRIFICED A LOT TO RACE, MAKING IT WHAT IT IS TODAY, NOT HAVING MONEY AND COMING FROM A VERY HUMBLE BACKGROUND, AS SEEMS A LOT OF THE OLD RACERS CAME FROM, NOW WHAT DO THEY HAVE? THE TODAY'S RACE CAR DRIVERS MAKE MILLIONS, AND THEY OWE SO MUCH TO THE CHARLIE GLOTZBACHS OF THE WORLD WHO HAVE SO LITTLE AND GAVE SO MUCH.IN MY PROFESSION WE TAKE CARE OF OUR OWN. WE HAVE PENSIONS FOR THE OLD TIMERS, WE REVERE THEM AS WE WOULD NOT BE WERE WE ARE UN LESS THEY HAD PAVED THE WAY.THAT THE OLD RACE DRIVERS DID YEARS AGO.i SO ADMIRE THE PETTY'S AND ALL THE NEWER DRIVERS WHO GIVE SO MUCH TO HELP SO MANY CHILDREN, WHAT A BLESSING, AND WHAT A BLESSING IT WOULD BE TO DO THE SAME FOR THE OLD GUYS. ESPECIALLY THE MANY WHO GET SUCH LITTLE FROM SOCIAL SECURITY AND ARE TOO OLD TO DO TOO MUCH PHYSICAL WORK TO EARN MONEY.YOURS KINDLY,SHARON STONE
Charlie was among those who missed induction by a slim margin in this inaugural year. By the way...Charlie hasn't done too badly for himself since his retirement from racing. He attends several of the events we host and participate in. He raced in the Old School RacersReunion.com Shootout July 18, 2008. He is a member of RacersReunion.
Well if you mention Petty, Pearson, Allison, etc. you're playing to the crowd, not all of which are race fans, kinda like you don't have to be a baseball fan to know the name Babe Ruth. Charlie was amongst those of a level where he was well known at the track but probably could go into a McDonalds and not be recognised. Much like Dick Brooks, Ramo Stott, or even Pete Hamilton. No less skillful or worthy of a place in history, just not as mainstream.
