I'm thinking about co-opting "Chug Montgomery" as my race weekend nickname when I'm with my Schaefer HOF brethren.

A quick Google search (that I should've done BEFORE I posted the ad & articles) provided much more detail about the race. One driver's name caught my eye - Jim Roper, the winner of the first NASCAR Strictly Stock race in Charlotte two years earlier. http://winfield.50megs.com/Hutch_Nationals/Fair/13May1951.htm

As I gathered my gear for the trip to the 600 in 2011, I doubled-over laughing when I spotted a random Schaefer Light under my work bench. I had no idea how long it had been under there - maybe a couple of years. It was covered in dust and cobwebs, and it had been subjected to a wide range of temperature extremes.
I used a Sharpie to mark the bottom of it with "TMC" so at least one of us would know to avoid it. As the weekend progressed, I turned from avoidance to deviant opportunism. I targeted the 22 year-old son of one of our SHOFers to go bottoms up with it. As we got ready to head for the track, I offered it to him without the backstory. Sure enough, boom, it was gone without hesitation - even as I shuddered.
Afterwards, I told him the story - and he STILL didn't flinch. "The rest of the story" as Paul Harvey said for years is that I have an immense amount of pride. I'm not necessarily proud of the prank I pulled. But that feller with the tough constitution for a skunky beer is now in the United States Marine Corps. He hasn't been able to be with us since 2011 - but I understand he'll have some leave this year that will allow him to be back with us in 2016. I can't wait to shake his hand, hug his neck and offer our Chug Montgomery a genuinely fresh, cold Schaefer.
