Carolina Beach 1966

Rare aerial photo of the Carolina Beach speedway, 1966. The track opened in 1964, and may have made it to 1967...barely. It was a low-banked 1/2 mile (mostly sand) speedway. The speedway was never impressive, in itself, but launched the careers of "Hoss" Ellington, "Runt" Pittman, Richard Brickhouse, and Jackie Rogers......all future NASCAR participants. Pittman's engines would ultimately win the "Daytona 500" three times. The old speedway is long gone....the site presently graced by the "Cape Golf and Racket Club"

The large Oak tree that was in the middle of the infield on the hill is supposedly still there.
