Long since plowed under, the granddaddy of all Virginia speedways lies dormant. Located near Marion, VA, the 1/2 mile Southwest Virginia Speedway was the first speedway constructed in Virginia, after World War II, and the first, ever, Virginia track purpose-built for auto racing. Prior to SWS, Virginia auto racing utilized fairground horse tracks. Future legends, Curtis Turner and Bill Blair competed in the first-ever event in 1947.
