Seems that NASCAR is contradicting themselves. While driving home today I was thinking about the penalties handed out and thought I had remembered where NASCAR had said it was OK to have a cell phone in the car. So once here Igoggledit and look what I found.

NASCAR: Brad Keselowski's phoneOK

Updated:February 28, 2012, 8:37 PM ET

Associated Press

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- NASCAR said Tuesday Brad Keselowski can keep his cellphone in his race car during events, and all drivers are encouraged to use social media.

Keselowski drew worldwide attention for posting on Twitter during a red-flag period in Monday night's season-opening Daytona 500. He posted pictures, answered questions and kept fans informed of what was happening during the stoppage that lasted just over two hours.

The tweeting gained Keselowski roughly 140,000 followers during the race.

But there was concern having a phone violated NASCAR rules. Teams are prohibited from having recording devices in the car that are not for competition purposes, and two-way communication devices are supposed to be analog only.

NASCAR said Keselowski had not violated any rules and can keep his phone.

"NASCAR will not penalize Brad Keselowski for his use of Twitter during last night's Daytona 500," NASCAR said in a statement. "Nothing we've seen from Brad violates any current rules pertaining to the use of social media during races. As such, he won't be penalized. We encourage our drivers to use social media to express themselves as long as they do so without risking their safety or that of others."

I think they're right to ban all electronic devices in the cars. You can fit many types of electronics inside a cell phone case and it will get easier as things are downsized more. Besides, why do you need a cell phone in a race car?

But I knew that Brad had gotten away with it earlier and had not heard of a rule change since then. I guess it's handy having a secret rule book! If all else fails, they can always hit you with "actions detrimental to stock car racing".

I agree with Andy...allowing the phone was a mistake in the first place. My guess is they figured that out afterward. Have you seen how small the traction control devices are now...hmmm. Any device that is capable of communication (or cpable of housing another such device) is an open opportunity for these tech savvy crew chiefs of today. I would certainly wager there were already some shenanigans taking place that involve cell phones in drivers pockets.

I had already figured this out. I remember FOX and NASCAR getting a huge boost out of Brad's tweets from the back straight in Daytona. They fined Brad for the phone because that was easier for their warped minds to explain than trying to say "we are fining Brad for speaking the truth about our screwups Sunday". I remember my Mother used to tell me not to tell the people at church that I went to stock car races. That was back in the 50s BEFORE she went to her first one. She was just wanting to protect me from what she was sure was the bad impression stock racing would give the folks at church as racing was seen as a wild sport, full of drunks and fights. NASCAR plays by its own rules. It is their ball and they will do what they want to with it. Sad, but true. "It is what it is", quote from the NASCAR genius. "Depends on what the definition of "is" is". Quote from the skirt chasing clown who used to live at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. See what I mean?

What a change! It's been awhile since I've checked in and I'm quite surprised. It may take me awhile to figure it our but first look it's really great.

From Charlotte Observer coverage:

In a surprise, Keselowski was fined $25,000 and placed on probation for using his cell phone while the race was red-flagged for the Gordon/Bowyer wreck. He did the same thing in the season-opening Daytona 500 with no adverse action by NASCAR.

NASCAR claimed Monday it had since told drivers they could no longer have cell phones on board their cars during races, but had not publicly announced any such policy.

Maybe it wasn't a Sprint phone.
