BETCHA DIDNT KNOW THIS or maybe you didRichard Petty made history when he won a 200-lap race at the half-mile State Fairgrounds Raceway in Raleigh on September 30, 1970. It was the 42nd race of the season, the 989th major event in NASCAR history, and the last dirt-track Cup race in NASCAR ever sanctioned.Petty, driving his familiar No. 43 Plymouth, started sixth, and led one time for 112 laps to post the victory. It was the 15th win of the season and 117th of his career. As he was in most areas of NASCAR racing, Petty was one of the tour's best dirt-track racers. But the Petty listed No. 1 in the NASCAR record book under"most dirt-track wins" is Lee Petty, who got 43 of his 54 career victorieson dirt-tracks in the '50s and early '60s.REAL RACE FANS KNOW THAT Dirt's For Racing, Asphalt's For Getting There. That oughta make'em race on dirt at least twice a year!
