This was the first year Nascar awarded Nashville a second Cup date. The year before it was the "Mr. D's 200" Grand National East race. (That was before he was promoted to Captain - yes, the restaurant chain now known as Captain D's.) The '72 race was won by Bobby Allison in the Mustang. The crowd was so big and the race so successful Nascar rewarded Nashville by making it a second Nashville Cup race for 1973, and it remained on the schedule until Nashville lost both Cup dates in March of 1985.
