Thanks for the comments ya'll. Dang Ronda, you're supposed to find a prince by kissing a frog. What do you get when you kiss a gator???? Ronda McKnight said:
That looks sooooo cool, but i am a reptile lover anyway. I bet I am the only person here who has kissed a gator. That is a story for another day. Great cars too.

It's the official Jackie Sims Race Cars logo I just did for my brother who builds some of the best race car models around. Now I know just how the racing mechanics feel. You're never reallly finished with a car, the driver just takes it away from you when it's time to race. LOLWith the new background and the little red surround it almost looks official, don't it? Photobucket It makes a pretty neat front fender decal on ol' Red's late model that Gator built me for my birthday.. Photobucket Even ol' Buck's Chevelle looks better with something on the quarters. One of the "very hard to find limited edition large" decals just sets it off I think. I can't believe how much easier it is to letter a model with PaintShop than with that itty bitty brush I usually use. LOL Photobucket

HRA also sanctioned Lancaster and Starlite Speedway. I worked with John Reynolds at both tracks back then. Even still got a couple of the rule books.

Gatormobile Birthday Racer #2- "Here's Buck"

Current NASCAR

Even in the twilight of a career that ranged from early dirt track modifieds to pioneer Grand Nationals on dirt to the intimidating speeds and high banks of Talladega, Buck Baker was a force to be reckoned with. Pity the upstart that thought he could teach that "old man in tha little Chevelle" a thing or two about racing, by that time there wasn't much that the GN champion and three time winner of the Southern 500 hadn't already seen. Neil Bonnett Monte Carlo leads off three new Gatormobiles.

Thanks RIck. Me and my brother have been at this for a combined total of around eighty years and it's still fun. We both started building and handlettering local dirt cars (I had been building all kinds of models for over ten years by then) around in the late sixties and we haven't stopped yet.We both cast our own wheels and tires and he has even built a two stage vacuform to make just about any kind of body you can think of, from dirt wedge cars to late model sportsman Chevelles and early fifties hobby stocks. You should check out his photo galleries at http://public.fotki.com/gator-gallery/ He's a true artist and the best kid brother anyone ever had.

Sorry to have to break the news to you, but that set ran out the end of one of Gator's magic brushes. I've got a DVD in the works that shows my whole collection that I hope to also have a "how to" on hand lettering from prepping the brushes to chosing and mixing the paint to actually doing the lettering. I'll keep you posted on the progress.

I got home in time to use some of the very rare sunshine we had today and got my birthday presents out for a portrait session. Here's the first one through the lens, a first generation Monte Carlo stock car. Another fine ride from Jackie Sims Race Cars. Photobucket

Southern 500 Memories-Part 2

Stock Car Racing History

Thanks for all the feedback on the first set of pics and I hope ya'll enjoyed them. Here's the next installment of the Darlington racers. When the guys at Holman Moody went up to Dearborn to get that load of "scrap metal and rejected parts" back in late '58 it wasn't like most scrap piles. This one had a pretty narrow range of components. In fact, when it was all unloaded and sorted out it was parts from only one kind of car and there was enough parts to build several cars. Cotton Owens was one of the beneficiaries of the "mix up" and wound up with this brand new "salvage" Thunderbird. There was some major behind chewing at the "officially not racing" FoMoCo offices and a brand new company policy on the handling of scrap sales was quickly put into place to close those loopholes that were big enough for a 430 cubic inch Lincoln engine to fall through. Photobucket Back in 1960 there was a carpenter in Elmhurst Illinois who could drive more than nails so he came down south to see if he could run with the big dogs. He brought this new Ford Starliner with him but the only thing that got "hammered" was his pride, which was part of the problem, and his bank account. He wanted to do things his way and it didn't take long for the money to dry up and he was a carpenter again. But around Christmas time that year a phone call from an ex-racer named Moody was to change all that. But that's a story for another time. Photobucket

Tom, as I said, these were copy machine prints so the quality wasn't that good. Since you know him ask if he would do you some better copies. If he can't get it done the I'll be happy to copy the ones I have. Please tell him that Jerry said hello and ask him to let you check out the photo CD I gave him with the old Nascar models of mine on it.

I named my son after Duane back in 1970 because I pulled for him at Starlite in Monroe NC. Back then I sat in the stands and never got down to the pits so I never got to meet Duane to tell him. Well, I-77 Speedway (formerly Chester Speedway) had a Starlite reunion a couple of years back and I finally got to meet Duane and tell him about his namesake that was now shooting pictures for out local track. He was a really great guy and after meeting and talkiing with him I was glad I had named my son after him. He brought some zeroxed copies of pics of a few of his cars to give out that nite, including the '57 Ford he had been driving when I saw him at Starlite to autograph and give out and I've got them around here somewhere. I'll get them scanned in in a day or two and post them here for you.
