FROM THE MOUTH OF "WILD THING"

Stock Car Racing History

Visit www.mars.com and check out all their products. We started 2 years ago not buying any of their product line...we have a list in our grocery cart every week to remind us. I know I'm a very small part of this world, but maybe a few million of me could make a difference. Mars needs to decide if they want to support Kyle Busch and Joe Gibbs Racing.

I think maybe Kyle Busch might be wearing thin on the Mars family. They carry the big stick and full wallet.

What the speechwriters said for Kyle means nothing to me. It's the same old same old, year in and year out crap from this child, he never learns. Such a shame, he has a lot of talent behind the wheel, it's just too bad he can't act like a man, just a 3 year old (No offense to the 3 year olds).

Speed, at what cost?

General

i agree whole heartedly with Christophers comments, but I want to take it one step further. One important piece of safety equipment is what's between a drivers ears. You will never win a race on the first, tenth, fifteenth or even half way lap and to race like it does causes mistakes. Drivers need to think not just what is going on around them, but what can happen behind them if they decide to race too hard from the get-go. Usually the serious injuries or worse happens behind or along side the initial contact. I didn't see the race, but I'd guess Weldon and others came up into it with no time to react.

Tell Me About Yourself

General

I'm from just west of Detroit and hang wallpaper and paint houses (interiors) for a living. I've been a race fan since the early 60's and grew up in the heart of GM country between Flint and Saginaw in Bridgeport, Michigan. This was difficult for me because I am a Ford guy but I think I held my own. Ask some of the Chevy guys who ran up against my '67 Falcon 289 hi-po. My hometrack is Dixie Motor Speedway which is named for the highway it's on...Dixie Highway that used to go from the Mackinaw Bridge to Miami Florida.. Luckily the track is doing well and has been incontinuousoperation since 1949.. I'm very active in trying to preserve the memories of short track racing from the old days in Michigan and working with Dixie to get all the track champions and major race winners properly identified. Like many tracks. not great records were kept. I'm married, 2 grown kids who don't care for racing but have a wife who enjoys watching with me. I'm a big David Pearson fan and now Brad Keselowski from Michigan. My short track hero's growing up are Joy Fair and Tom Maier (drove the Ed Howe 6o1ng car that terrorized the midwest in '73 and '74) who I call a friend. Oh, and I love Racers Reunion and all Jeff and Dustin Gilder have done to preserve the past. Almost forgot, I became a first time Grandpa a month ago. Gotta get to that kid early to set him on the right path to enjoy racing like I have.

TV Shows I miss

General

A show I loved was Great Drivers (I think that's what it was called) on TNN with Brock Yates. And all the ASA coverage done by TNN. Great days!!

MRN vs ESPN2 Announcers

General

Jim, if I could pull in MRN up here in the Metro Detroit area, that TV would be OFF!!! As it is, I only catch bits and pieces because I get bored and do other things and check in to get a beer. There is no comparison between MRN and TV although I really enjoy seeing Andy Petree and love the segments with Tim Brewer at the Tech Car. I didn't get to see the Tuesday race because of...uh Working?? Radio would've been great for me on Tuesday.

What's That Mean?

Trivia

DefinitelyDover, the first time I heard "self cleaning" used was by Buddy Baker when he did the announcing on TV.
