Virginia'a first automobile race

Stock Car Racing History

Brian, could you also put this in the Virginia Racing Heritage page that Jeff Gilder has set up? Great piece of history. Do you have a list of the drivers/manufacturers who were there? I'd love to see the list and where they were from. As a side note, I listened to the announcers during the MIS race talk about the car "Sweepstakes" that ran in Grosse Pointe, Michigan in 1901. The restored car was on display at the speedway and they were so far off base about the race I just laughed! Thanks Brian.Pete in Michigan

How Nascar should do a fair scheduling

General

Great comments by everyone!! Nascrap is scrambling to figure out why ratings and crowds are down. It's a lot of things, the economy being a small part of it. Getting back to traditional tracks and thinking about fans instead of drivers, teams and big money sponsors will help. Fans pay the bills yet we're thought of last. I think it would be a great idea to have a drivers motorhome demo derby using their own motorhomes would be a great way to attract a crowd. WE NEED HUMPY and less 500 employee "Super Teams".

I was worried for a moment when Elliott hit that wall head on

Current NASCAR

Johnny, what really bothered me is he should've had some help getting out of the car. Why he had to extract himself and walk to an ambulance is beyond me. As Andy Petree said on the broadcast, that car is headed straight for the trash can.I also don't remember anyone saying where are the track safety personnel? Probably would have got fined by Nascar for a derogatory remark...but I'll say it. Where were they?? Send me the bill, Nascar! You may not want to deliver it in person because you'll wear it home!

WHAT NASCAR LEARNED AT POCONO TODAY

General

I wonder if Nascar or Pocono safety personnel learned that they need a better response to a wrecked race car. I kept hearing how the Elliott Sadler accident was the hardest hit anyones seen since Don Mactavich and yet Elliott gathered his thoughts, unhooked his belts and helmet, made his way out of the car in a LOT of pain, kneeled down on the ground and finally laid down next to the car. Not a safety person near him. Did he walk to the infield car center or did someone finally show up to drive him?

Cousin Carl Edwards, you tell me

General

I wonder if anyone has calculated how many destroyed bent up race cars have been in the wake left by Edwards and Keselowski?

Ernest Sutton said it for me. I agree with him 100%. There is a precedence for dealing with this kind of on track action by Nascar, but with wishy-washy Brian France in charge I don't think he has the guts to handle it the was his Dad did with Dale Earnhardt and Geoff Bodine. Remember?? Problem solved or Dale Earnhardt, Geoff Bodine, Richard Childress and Rick Hendrick could find another line of work because they weren't coming back to race Nascar. Maybe another group meeting to see if the drivers and their car owners want to pursue other interests. Ernest Sutton said:
I can appreciate what you're saying, Billy, and you are right about wrecks & rivalries filling up more seats in the grandstands - and NASCAR certainly needs that, seeing as how those numbers have been declining the last 2-3 years. The one thing I do not ever want to see again, though, is a driver lose his life on the racetrack - and I've seen that more times than I care to talk about. Keselowski's car stopped sideways on the track & he got t-boned on the passenger side - I don't even want to think about what the result would have been if it had been on the driver's side. I don't have any problem with aggressive driving - after all, that's what racing is supposed to be about anyway - and I believe that when drivers have disagreements on the track, those should be settled off the track.....in whatever manner they choose to settle it. I realize the cars are a lot safer today than they were in the past, but I still can't agree with using them as weapons. And, of course, the other issue is all the equipment of innocent bystanders being torn up - some of those teams are big-money teams, but others are not & can't afford those kinds of losses. I'm all for the most aggressive racing they can put on the track & yes, racers do assume the risk when they strap themselves in, but I believe intentional wrecking is crossing the line of acceptability.
