UVa Library needs help with 1970 stock car racing ID

Stock Car Racing History

I beleive this is John Prillaman who was from Roanoke. He was an insurance salesman and helped at Martinville Speedway as an ambassador or checkered flag committee member. He also was a fixture at Franklin County Speedway and probably had many clients in racing. He was very knowlegable about local racing. That is about the best I can remember.

Kurt Busch - Days of Thunder retro scheme

Current NASCAR

Dave, I too can relate to all the hype of being around those movie cars. The movie was a big deal back then as NASCAR was still in the climbing popularity mode. I remember the premier being held at the theatre on Harris Blvd. and Albemarle Rd. in Charlotte and everyone in racing turning out. Too bad it was too Hollywood for us. I wonder what Hal Needham thought of it?I do remember the production company trying to buy show cars for the set, and we were trying to sell our old Swisher Sweets Olds to them but the engine was not up to par.The only thing really good that came from all of that is that it helped to establish Bobby Hamilton, as he made some good money drving one of the film cars. The other car doing the filming was driven by Rick Mast and that actually helped to give Rick a resurgance in his career. Mast had parted ways from his Busch Series father-in-law team owner Allan Dillard and did not have a ride for the next season. Mast used the money he made from the movie to build his own team and make the season opening Daytona Goody's 300, and also win a couple of races that year. And the rest, as they say, is history. The only thing I remember that caught from the movie for race teams and drivers was the two-finger, kind of Texas Longhorn wave that Tom Criuse did before the start of the race. Ernie Irvan did that all the time along with Dale Sr.

Who watched closed circuit TV?

Stock Car Racing History

Ah yes, the infamous Teleprompter Company. I do remember well as my dad and myself , a young kid, viewed events at the Salem (Va.) Civic Centerwhich was in a neighboringtown next to Roanoke, Va. We paid eight dollars per ticket to see the '68 Daytona 500 in black and white. I have a brochure and ticket stub and program from the race. The program used featured the actual speedway edition cover but only contained about 12 pages was printedespecially for the broadcast, and it only cost one dollar. The '69 Daytona 500 race was shown also and was in color. Wethen viewedthe Yankee 600 at Michigan in June of '69, and that race had the official race program sold there. The race was about eight to nine hours long as it rained throughout the day, and the race was finally cut short due to darkness, but we stayed as long as they were showing it. Kind of reminded you of taking a cooler into a movie theatre. If I remember correctly, therewas apretty good turn out of fans for these racesat theSalem Civic Center.

Need some Help with old NASCAR Winston Cup Schedule

Stock Car Racing History

Hey Will, if I remember correctly, the race at Phoenix was Winston West race and not a Cup race and sometimes a driver would stop by there and run it with a cup car. Not sure of the dates, but it was at the end of the season and drivers would stop by on their way home from Riverside.

Old Dale Earnhardt Toy from 1983

Stock Car Racing History

Dave, this is rare. I do have one too. Remember they also made a yellow and blue plastic helmet, just as rare. I have several of these types of cars including a Harry Gant Buick that does have Skoal on it before they were outlawed as toys. The Wrangler car is definitely one of the more rare ones especially having Dale's name on it.

Johnny Rutherford-Smokey Yunick

Stock Car Racing History

Starr is Bill and Martha's daughter, and probably is 8-10 years older than Chase. At last I heard Bill and Cindy were living a lot of the time in Colorado and Bill was flying his own plane to the races he was entered.

NASCAR Barbers

General

Well, Todd has looked this way since I have known him, hence "The Onion" nickname.

As for the 'Ville, well maybe Danny Bumpass could sponsor him! Think about it!

And Dave, you have way to much time on your hands, but it is funny!

The Long Reach of Bopper, Jeff & RR - Satch Worley's Log Cabin Raceway and "Momma's" Death

Stock Car Racing History

Just thinking also, maybe this would be a great reclamation project if we could get the right people involved. Would be an ideal area for a vintage festival. Hint. Hint.

The Long Reach of Bopper, Jeff & RR - Satch Worley's Log Cabin Raceway and "Momma's" Death

Stock Car Racing History

Thanks for posting those photos Johnny. I go by there all the time going to Roanoke and am going to have to make the time to stop.

As for the NDRA girls, well, Robert Smalley was always a showman. At first the girls would come out on the track in modest attire, such as skirts and such. As the night progressed, the girls would come out wearing a little less each time. Well, by the time the main event started you could basically use the old adage about two band aids and a cork, if you know what I mean. The show was definitely not for kids. Honestly, I am surprised that local law enforcement would not cite them for something! You could literally see things that make you go hummmmm.

The original Miss NDRA, Eva Taylor, was married to dirt track racer Scott Blomquist. Don't know if they are still married. She was a school teacher in TN at one time. How would you like to have been in that class!
