Remembering the brilliance of Smokey Yunick (1923 - 2001)

Uncategorized

Just 1 of my many inspirations to turn wrenches for a living, the stories of him doing the pontiacs and Chevrolets in NASCAR especially his banned 66chevelle, i have a poster in my shop that when i run into a tough problem ,i just look at the poster and say "What would you do Smokey"?

Which current drivers could have competed then?

Current NASCAR

I think Mark Martin would be about the only one, maybe jeff Burton and the Labonte's oh yea I think Billelliot would do very well.

NASCAR Heritage Tracks

Historic Speedways and Ghost Tracks

I think you idea is fantastic, BUT there are a lot of tracks that are no longer in existence that NASCAr does not run ayt PLUS ones that are still alive that NASCAR balks at. NASCAR is not interested in the short tracks that built it up, it is now a corporate giant that is sponsored by 200mph billboards, there is a 60 year history of NASCAR and the present day fans most of them only know the last 10 years, BUt like i said your idea is fantastic but i think you should include some tracks that are no longer in existence would be a nice touch

-RacersReunion® OUTREACH

Hi Sheila! I live in Baltimore Md. but was always liked NASCAR in California because of the running on short tracks and road courses, I was a big fan of Jack McCoy and Ivan Baldwin, and can't forget Gary Nelson. Jimmy won the Winston West title in 1978 and 1979 driving for Lakes Drywall, as afras what he is doing Im have no idea , sorry about that, but if you go to Stock car reunion.com you can probably get fruther and better information non Jimmy, yes i remeber these years when racing was fun, DAMN Imiss it!

How long have you been a race fan?

Stock Car Racing History

Was a fan from about 5 till i reached about 32. My Dad used to take me to Dorsey and Westprot in the late 50's early 60's, and then Beltsville opened up and I was lured to the asphalt and NASCAR Modified and Sportsman racing. Dad also took me to a telecast in a local movie theater of the 70 Daytona 500 and next year we went there, also saw my first Grand National race at Beltsville on 5/16/70, which by the way was the last "Cup" race ever in Maryland Bobby Issac won followed by James Hylton and Bobby Allison. Then France stopped the GN division on the short tracks ( brilliant idea "NOT"!!!!) I followed the LMS and worked in from 73-81 until NASCAR screwed it up as faras i am concerned, But this site takes me back to an easier time and time when racing was fun THANK YOU JEFF!

Who did they pay off??????

Current NASCAR

I agree with you Bobby, let me take it a step further. Unless the rules have changed before NASCAR accepted a body style or engine it must be stock production and at least 500 units maunfactured to be sold. I myself as a professional auto mechanic have "NEVER" seen a Toyota V-8 engine, with OHV (overhead valve) and carbureted. I have never seen nothing on any racing shows or channels what this power plant looks like! AS far as the way Toyota has been tearing up the circuit this year confuses me also, after last years flop, i mean the truck program was doing well why not the cup series? I would love to know the answer also. As for who got paid off, I have disenchanted with NASCAR since 81, they took the raciong from the people who supported it in the early years, there is an ol saying "Bill France gets whatever he wants" NASCAR use to be fan friendly, they will find out if they are not now, they turned the old LMS (late model sportsman) into busch, Nationwide, whatever the ehll they call it now, they don't run Hickory, Martinsville ( Cardinal and Dogwood classic was a weekend of GREAT racing) and South Boston. You don't hear nothing about the Modified tour anymore just the 3 touring series!!!!!! See, NASCAR is not for the people anymore it is so commercialised it is not funny, just 200mph billboards!!!!
