Twin Lakes Speedway

Bobby, I think you're pretty close. I've got a shot of the spot of the track today that I got using GPS coordinates of the site, but it's on my computer at work.I've actually been out to the spot where the track was. It's located out in the woods behind somebody's house (don't ask me who. We just drove out there on a Sunday and hoped for the best!).We actually couldn't pull down onto the track, as the road was getting pretty bad. We came within about 20 yards of it, though. This is a track that I've wanted to add to the "Lost Tracks" section at Georgia Racing History.com, but I haven't gotten my hands on any photos of racing at the track yet. Mike Bell (who was driving the day we visited the track) has said he has some, but I've not been able to get them yet.I know Roz Howard won out there, and I've been told one driver was pretty badly burned in a crash there at one point, but survived.I'll try to catch up with Mike in a day or so and get some more info for you.Brandon ReedGeorgia Racing History.com

Question about the Beach course

Historic Speedways and Ghost Tracks

I think I know the answer to this, but I've been getting questions and I want to clarify so there's no more guess work.

I know that the beach and road course changed several times over the years. But the basic course, as it was laid out in the mid to late fifties (as I've always understood), was two miles down A1A, a hard turn at the south, then two miles back up the beach to the north turn.

Here's my question - Someone put up a "today" photo of the layout, which shows A1A curving somewhat before it reaches the south turn. Back in the fifties, did the road curve leading to the south turn, or was it a straight shot?

I've always been under the impression that A1A was straight at that time, but has been reconfigured in recent years. Am I correct, or am I in error?

Thanks for your help!

I want to say yes, but I won't swear to it. I'll try to check tonight and let you know. Ernest Sutton said:
Thanks, Brandon..........does the program you have happen to have the entry list with it? Just curious............I really wish I had saved some of all the race programs & paraphenalia I ran across in those days. I worked many races in the Southeast..........Road Atlanta, Daytona, Sebring, Talladega, Selma, Robling Road (Savannah).........and wish I had more pictures from those days.

What a cool story. My stepfather, who passed away last week, was at that race. I still have his program and race info from the event. He said there was also a heck of a post-race party.

Thanks for sharing your story, and reminding me of his.

All Jacked Up…and Standing Tall On MY Soap Box!!!

Uncategorized

Ah, Jeff my friend, you just hit upon one of my pet peeves, and one of the things I railed against when we spoke in Dawsonville back in October. The problem is that, in this technical age, anybody with a computer and some web space can be a "racing journalist". They can spout anything that they want with little fear of reprisal and little need for research.Part of the problem is that some people present their "opinions" based as facts with very little, if any, research. The problem is compounded by groups such as the NASCAR PR wing, which works very hard to erase certain parts of history while placing over-emphasis on others. That's one of the reasons I started my website. I got sick of seeing the real journalism and the real stories get buried under blogs run by people who don't understand the history of the sport and don't seem to want to go and do the research and work it takes to tell the real stories. That's why your website is very, very important.People like you and I (and all the folks here, from what I can see) will just have to keep standing on the rooftops, yelling the truth and railing against those who wish to bury or ignore it. This is truly the good fight, Jeff. Keep it up.Brandon ReedGeorgia Racing History.com

N.B.,I'd just as soon not say who it was. This wasn't meant to embarrass or call anybody out. The tape was probably just mislaid or loaned to another writer, and it's disappeared. The point is that we're hoping against hope that there's another copy out there that somebody might have, and will be willing to share with us so we can add this to our growing archive of Lakewood Speedway footage.Incidentally, we also have footage from the infamous 1946 AAA Indy Car event, stock car and Indy car footage from the 50s, footage of Ed Otto's "Great Experiment" NASCAR sports car event, NASCAR Grand National footage, NASCAR Late Model footage from 1967, and footage of the Hell Drivers Stunt Show on the front stretch. One of the most exciting clips is also one of the shortest. It's shot from outside turns one and two, on Lakewood Avenue, in 1947, featuring the late Swayne Pritchett fighting for first with another driver. The car control these two show is AMAZING. And yes, all the things we've heard about Pritchett's talents, which were lost along with his life in 1948, were true!!!!But even with all that, we've only got about 30 minutes of total footage. 30 minutes from a track that existed for 62 years. Unreal. So if anybody has any additional footage, please contact me.But back to the matter at hand. We very, very much want to find a copy of that 1979 race. It was the last race ever at the grand old track, and it's a chunk of the history that we can never have back. Please feel free to email me at raceinfoga@gmail.com if you can help, or if you have any suggestions.

Stock Car Racing History

Hi folks, Eddie Samples and I were talking today, and I hit upon the idea that somebody here might be able to help us with out dilemma. The final race at Lakewood Speedway in Atlanta was held on Labor Day of 1979. Eddie was friends with the promoter, and so he had a front row seat. Even better, his dad, legendary driver Ed Samples, drove the pace car. What a grand send off for the old track.Well, for posterity, the entire event was taped. Eddie said the tape had EVERYTHING - the pre-race ceremonies, the skiers on the lake, the people in teh stands, legendary flagman Weyman Miliam directing race cars from the back of the pace car as Ed Samples drove, the race, post race interviews with many of the drivers.Eddie had a VHS copy of the race. He was asked by a well known motorsports journalist to borrow it for research on a story for the event. Eddie was kind enough to loan it to him.....and it never was seen again.Eddie said there were many, many copies of this VHS, they were sold to people. He was just one of many that bought a copy. Yet, we can't seem to come up with one person who has it.So, that brings me to my point. Does anybody here have a copy of that race, know somebody that has a copy, or have any suggestions of how to get a copy?Coming here was my brainstorm - I figure I have to be helpful in some way!Anybody who doesn't want to post can feel free to email me at raceinfoga@gmail.com.Thanks!!!-Brandon Reed
