UTTER DISAPPOINTMENT
Current NASCAR
LOL!
Can't say enough about these tidbits added on to the minutes. Makes hours out of minutes!
I've always wanted to know a bit more about Clark's lone stock car tryout so thanks for that clipping.
I first read about this race in Jaws' first book (with the 1989 Daytona 500 victory lane shot on the cover) so it's great to know more about it here in this post. He was very proud to beat those guys, particularly Bobby Unser who said before the race something like, "Oh, the local boy, that's cute" about DW being in that race.
Yet another great car builder that was a former driver and in this case, a very capable one. Looking back through history, were there any great car builders/crew chiefs that never tried their hand behind the wheel? Dale Inman would be one, I guess.
That was pretty awesome, Dave!
It's ironic how an Indy driver won the first major superspeedway NASCAR race in a car owned by France, given how much he hated Indy.
Seeing Herschel McGriff in that race just blows my mind. He has been through virtually the entire history of stock car racing.. and still races if I'm not mistaken. He's experienced every phase of it. Amazing life.
Funny story about Baker and the tomato juice!!
Sadly, Darlington is no longer hard on tires with the new magic asphalt they put down in 2008 that doesn't seem to wear out one bit with age. Regan Smith won the 2011 race by beating drivers with fresh tires. I fear tire shredding surfaces are a dying breed with these modern asphalt mixes that they use.
He got the wall early on so might actually have lost the handle, Dave.
