Larry Frank, 1962 Southern 500 winner, has passed.

General

Well put Jerry, LARRY FRANK was special, he was in the big wreck at Daytona 1960, we talked about that wreck for over an hour, a great story. He drove a car for George Pool at Charlotte motor speed way, this was the same car that Glenn Wood set on pole at Daytona M/S race 1958. This was the first race at Charlotte after it was finished, my dad Gordon Mangum was a crew member on the car #22, I have tried to do some research on this race, the information I get from the track, they say it never happened, Larry started 3rd behind Buck Baker, passed Buck going down the back stretch and led most all the race until a right front wheel bearing failed., I'm thinking Larry still finished in top five. If any one knows about this race please contact me. This race was a Mod Sportsman race, oh yes Buck Baker won the race. This was the first race for this track after it was finished. I'm thinking 1959 early to mid season.Way to go Larry,

We have lost another,Jimmy Griffin(1935-2008)

Uncategorized

Thanks Tommy, for posting this about Jimmy Griffin, Jimmy was special to us, we go back to the mid 50's, he worked for the lemons Brothers garage in Draper NC. Now called Eden NC. I think they specialized in building Moonshine cars, ect, ect. A bunch of gifted people.Jimmy was a natural great driver. The U2 and the 007 days along with all the others cars that he drove shows the history that he had in racing. As I have said about the others that have passed, I am blessed to have known these great drivers and greater people.I know the race at the big "H" speedway is about to start, Jimmy tell them all hello for me, especialy my dad Gordon Mangum, he will be starting from the pole. Thanks, Clyde Mangum

Woodbrothers Racing .

Stock Car Racing History

Hello Harlow,True Cris Williams was a coe, owner with the first two cars in 1950-51. On the first car, number #50, their were five to be owners at $10.00 each. This was 1950, when it came time to put up the money only two had the money, Glenn Wood and Chris Williams. At $25.00 each Glenn said it just about broke him. Yes the car cost them $50.00, The number of the car #50, and the year was 1950.I know this is not the answer you are looking for on the first driver, I believe Eb Clifton drove this car #50 for Glenn and Chris at Morris speedway (Horse Paster Va) the first race.My information came from Glenn Wood, and Eb Clifton. Check out my pictures, I have some of this car#50 Keep in touch,Clyde
