Fantastic "Jim Hunter" show!!

General

Fantastic show last night gentlemen!! I loved the talk with Mr. Hunter, priceless,(as Tim would say!) Jack also read the finishing order for the 1958 Mod. beach race and a question came up about Phil Orr, I think from Tim, if any relation to Rodney Orr? Talked to LeRoy Porter today (a member of RR and friend of Phil from early 60's) and he said no relation. It was a tradgedy to lose Rodney at Daytona. Also no relation to Pete Orr, a multi time super late model champion at New Smyrna Speedway, who we lost to cancer a few years ago. GOD SPEED RACERS!! Rick Coody

Modified pictures everywhere...

Johnny, This one could be hard to define without breaking it down to "era" and politically correct names.(fancy huh?) I think modifieds are what most of us watched through the 50' and 60's until the names changed to "Late Models" "Open Wheel Modifieds" and looked a lot more different. Before, we had stock cars which could mean strickly stock, sportsman, late model stocks, and modified stock, and now we have more divisions than we can keep up with! BT could define by name or era where his meaning is. To me, sounds and smells like a race car, goes to the end of the straitaway and turns left, I'm in!!! I love em all!! Rick johnny mallonee said:
Hey Ricky glad you picked up on this whats your take on the saga define a modified vs an old school race car vs a late model plastic car

Bumpertag --- dont give up that easy --- I was just getting into our weekly debate ---but never fear there will be another that will start a neat discussion and you can partake in that one also

Good points by all and I understand that what I see as modifies some see as early stock cars. Each decade the racing and racers have changed, and I guess it becomes a question of what you grew up around. Here in upper S. Carolina I never heard of or saw a modified racer until around the mid 70's, and it wasn't anything that interested me. Other than a few of the top drivers, I nerver knew anything about the drivers or teams. This was like a little known sub series that lacked the drawing power to gain popularity to equal that of NASCAR stockers in that era. I know that was not the case, that the modies had a huge following and could hold it's own with any division. It just never appealed to me. To be honest, I liked the Baby Grands more than the modifieds because they looked more like street cars.

Jeff, this site could never disappoint me. I'll just have to wade through all the stuff that others like to find what I like. Fans of the open wheelers have to go through pictures they don't care for, so it's all a wash. No hard feelings, I hope, and please keep posting all the pictures you can find. Great site!

Is there a contest I missed?

General

I've been invited to join a few clubs also and thought at first, I don't know this racer, which led to my next thought, my loss! What better way to learn about these veterans of racing, past and present! I now look forward to invites, it's like meeting new people and reaquainting with ones I do know! My next goal is to meet as many of you racers in person as possible! It's GREAT to meet people I already know and get to know the ones that have already taken that last checkered flag!!! RR makes this possible! Rick Coody

Hey Ernest, That was some fantastic racing at I-75 Speedway all through the 60's!! I was born in Madison Fla. and grew up there through the 60's(10 miles south of the track) and spent most Saturday nights at that track. Sam drove a lot for Jimmy Thomas from Columbus Ga. in the yellow #22 quite a lot in 63,64.65. In 66,67, and 68, he drove mostly for Steve Sheffield from Madison. I think that blue #67 DeSoto was built by Jimmy Thomas and was very fast!! On one night in 66, Harvey made a comment that if he was driving that #67 car, he could win about every race too!! Sam OKed it with Steve and traded cars with Harvey. Sam outran Harvey in his own car!! What a great show that was! Do you remember that? It was GREAT! Did you go to any of the other tracks in the area? Lake City,Albany, Jacksonville,Waycross,Dublin,Dothan Ala. All great tracks! Drop a line. Rick Coody
