Of the 75 men that faced starter Alvin Hawkins in the first 500 at Darlington only 6 where set to start the 1957 Southern 500. Who were those drivers?
The list would have been 7 long if a finance company collector had not snatched the car from undera previous winneras it sat on starting line in 1950. Who was he?
The key word in your report is "R E S P E C T". Both men had it.
Jim, I for one am very happy and grateful that youjoined RR. Thank you for your contributions to this site. I never saw you race but my Dad raced with you. You will never know how surprised I was when I watched the video you posted of you at Johnston County (Cat Tail Pond) and saw Dad in his '37 Ford straight back on the track with you along with several other great racers from that time. Thanks again for sharing a part of your life with your fellow racing fans.
Oh, if I had only saved all those Southern Motorsports Journals. Racing history!
Dave, These guys never won a Grand National race but they were winners somewhere before they got to GN level. If I remember correctly, "Soap" won a couple of Grand National East races. They all were good racers, I saw Soap and Elmo run side by side for many laps and one never roughed up the other.
Jeff, Help me understand photo rights in layman terms. Are you saying that when someone post a picture on facebook that the rights to that picture are then facebook's?
Hey Johnny, From the comments I heard several drivers make there seemed to be mixed reviews on some of the rule changes the merger has brought. One in particular is how much easier it was for cars that had lost laps to make them up during full course cautions. That is how they made the laps up. The teams making up laps grudgingly accepted the new rule but will be like the other teams when the shoe is on the other foot and competitors are making up laps on them, they won't like it.
Wonder if the anger Mike Shank showed when they got hit with a penalty during one of the cautions had any thing to do with the post race penalty?
Johnny, I knew Charlie won the ARCA race at Daytona but did not know it was in this car. How COOL is that? The same car on dirt and Daytona.
This was a Grand National East event that had GN cars, GA cars and ARCA cars in the field. By the way, the car Wayne Andrews drove was a '70 Mustang owned by Roanoke's Jack St.Clair. He drove the Ham car in 1974.
I think your right Dave, Charlie Blanton also drove this car.
