As we lay our head down for the last time Friday in 2010

General

Thank you Johnnie. Bless you Cody, my last year was the opposite, the worst of my life, filled with sickness, ugliness, and some fear, which unfortunately remains. So my prayer for the new year, including all you said Johnnie, is to remember the good that there was last year, and that we all, and me and my family, walk in faith, in peace, good health and with no fear as we continue to pile up the laps, and not just by sight. (and just to show the gift of humor is still around, notice I said "not JUST by sight" instead of "not by sight period," as since we are racers we kinda need to keep our eyes open!LOL)

Richard Petty article from 1969 about switch to Ford

Stock Car Racing History

Gee Tim, as to your impromptu race, this really surprises me! Did you ever have the gas pedal anywhere more than halfway to the floor? I can't believe that, especially in a lightweight Roadrunner with a Hemi or even a 383 probably, you would have made anything Ford made in 68 or 69 get awfully small and disappear in your rearview mirror in a very short period of time. I mean, if you were duking it out on an oval with Richard or going around a bunch of twisties, I can see him keeping up with or possibly beating you if both your cars were stock. But if you were on the big broad interstate, you must have " let him win." LOL Or, maybe it would be more accurately described that after you clearly had beaten him you just backed off to save getting a ticket. An educated guess by me, one who still does care about make, always have and always will be a Chrysler man (but to each his own, I still loved Larry Detjens after he sold the Hemi Challenger and went with a Camaro and Richard Petty is still one of my heros to this day), I would estimate your 69 Roadrunner, dead stock, would have topped out in the area of 165 to 170 miles per hour conservatively. No Cobra Jet Torino would approach that, with all due respect. Richard was the King and the greatest ever, but he wouldn't have been able to push the gas pedal any harder than you in this type of race.

Your pal, Dave Bayer

I knew they were there, Jeff, just wondering what I could have done wrong. I didn't change anything, and about 3 days ago they were just gone, though I do still get the slide show and that type of thing. I'll check on all the updates. Thanks.DAve Bayer

Hey Jeff, Robbie, Jay, anyone that can help,
For about the last 3 days now I have been unable to view any photos in the Racing photos gallery. The captions are there, the slide show works but I get no images on the big gallery. Anything, you, or I or both can do? Thanks guys.

It is with deep regret and sadness that I must inform you all

Now this might not top all your "Redline 7000" experiences, but as your fellow racing buddy and Stock Car Racers Reunion brother, I'll bare my soul. This movie was either based on a book or the book came after the movie. Yes, when I was about oh, 14 or 15 years old I found it in my High School Library and READ IT! Yikes. No color, no sound, no kiddin! And, even at that age I was far ahead of whatever curve the writer was on as far as my knowledge of the Sport. Needless to say, I didn't check it out again nor have I sought out my own copy since. NO, don't all race to hook me up with one now.........Dave Bayer

ARE SPORTS CARS STOCK CARS?

You and I are definatley on the same page Bill. I worry that the Cup is becoming a spec series, but agree now, they are still in the family tree.

ARE SPORTS CARS STOCK CARS?

Uncategorized

My Answer is they can be. But I think they should be at least loosely based on or at least resemble a street car. To put it into persepective, as you must be a Porsche guy go a great extent, I would think 911 race cars, 930 Widebodies, perhaps even production class 914's, Paul Smith's 924 Trans Am GT I SCCA car would be acceptable stock cars. I've always seen them as such be they road race or Rally. I think most Rallye cars are very akin to stock cars and acceptable. 917'S AND 956'S however aren't even sillouette cars. They are purely big time racing prototypes, more or less Can Am cars with roofs and they just don't have that stock car feel to them as the Trans AM cars, GTO or early Imsa type cars did, or GT I , super GT types do. Not to say I didn't love the Can Am but they weren't stock cars. Touring cars, Australian Super Touring, oh yeah, I think they're stock cars. And those of you who would question then, should Nascar cup cars since say 2001 and especially the Cot's then qualify as Stock cars? And I would say, that is a very good question! lol but true. What in the heck are they? Do they fit in any catagory?

Mike, Thanks for the nice welcome. I have seen some of Jerry's work on the net and in print. It is wonderful. I myself was most humbled and shocked really when I won this years Alan Kulwicki Memorial Award for the best stock car at this years Milwaukee NNL. I'll stick a photo of that in here. Its a heavily modified and hand lettered 64 Galaxy. I hand letter most of the cars so a lot of mine are what ifs but I have a Sal Tovella Merc and a Norm Nelson 67 Usac car on the bench now. I think everybody that does this probably has a dozen or so partially finished projects goin at one time! LOL If I can get this to work, I'll post up the Galaxy here, a kit car I built for my wife because she loves snowmen (you'll see) and a Buick Short tracker where you can see some of my engine work. I'll try and get a line of posts going here if I can in the near future showing some of these in addition to our other more serious chit chat. Thank you again, I'm sure we'll be talking a lot.Dave B.

I'm a new member, just joined today when a friend pointed me this way. I'm a prosecuting attorney who just turned 50 today, always wanted to be a late model racer for real but life just twisted and turned me in other directions, but I grew up in the Central Wisconsin Hay days. At our home track the Dells Motor Speedway it was common every Saturday night to see all of the likes of Trickle, Detjens, Marzofka, Reffner, Sauter, Bickle, Musgrave, Shear, Watson, Back, you name em, racing each other at just the normal weekly program. My very first race was when my Parents took me to the 1969 Governors Cup 250 at the Milwaukee Mile where in the waning laps Don White patiently chased down AJ Foyt to take the win. Looking forward to answering questions, asking quiestions, looking at all the great stuff. Looks like it will take a long time to surf through everything here. I also avidly build models of Stock Cars, with some Nascar but mostly other circuits and short track stuff as my specialty. I'm really looking forward to this and thank you all. I'll attach a couple of those here.Dave B.
