Anyone ever heard of Saugerties Speedway?????

Historic Speedways and Ghost Tracks

So we have something in common besides racing. We both dislike @*!#^% snow !!!

I tell folks about it snowing sideways foe 2 1/2 days and they can't believe it. Drifts 20-30 feet deep on on side of a building and no snow on the otherside. My college dormitory, Scales Hall, was right on the lake shore, so we got the full force of the storm.

Now, here's a funny one for ya'. I moved south to go to work for Michelin Tirein '77 and to get away from snow and rust. I transfer into the test driving group in '79 and guess what part of the job is?? We have to test tires in the snow, which means I have to go up there for a month or so to testin that "stuff" every year. Over the years we would go to Vermont, Canada and eventually the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I did that for 9-10 years. Again, I don't care to see another snow flake.

Bill, Part of the year, especially during racing season, it's real nice up there.

BUT, during most of the school year the weather sucks. January 1966 I endured a 2 1/2 dayblizzard that deposited 109" of snow in ONE storm in Oswego. Look it up, it's on the record books. It was a "Perfect Storm". The warm water from Lake Ontario kept feeding it. 35 miles south in Syracuse I was toldthey never got a snow flake!!!!!!!!

A saw more snow in ONE storm than most folks in South Carolina will see in their ENTIRE life. I snarl at folks that tell me snow is pretty!!!

Racing and snowmobiling are the only things that kept me up there as long as it did.

I've never seen a race at Fulton on the dirt. I've driven at Fonda many times. It was a real drivers track.

In New York there's a dirt track, Fonda,in Fultonville, located between Albany and Utica, and a dirt track in Fulton (was originally asphalt), Fulton Speedway, located north of Syracuse and south of Oswego (where I went tocollege).

So there's all kinds of Fultons in NY besides the the "Folly".

Stretch was my favorite driver at Lebanon Valley Speedway in the early 60's. He drove a cross fired Chevy V-8 in a '55 Chevy #99. He was a "COOL" guy.

Doug Garrision "X"and Rebel Harris "AAA"were other "hot shoes".

Stretch is the only survivor.

Results from Shelby

Stock Car Racing History

Last time I was up there ya' suspended Ryan Howard from the track. Now he's a winner.

Ya' must've reinstated him.

#8, Dennis Williams called me lookin' for repair parts. Must've taken a pretty good lick in the right rear to break the axle housing.

Looks like I'll be helpin' to repair the white#44 '55 Ford, Bobby Reed. Three races and two (maybe three)wrecks

Your guys racing or havin' a demo-derby up there?

Stock Car Racing History

Go to 10:02 of the tape. You'll see the Mercury #24 driven by Buddy Howard pulling into the garage area.

I just bought that car last week. Was built, owned and maintained by Thackston Garage in Woodruff, SC. I took itover there and Rhett & Curtis Thackston confirmed it was the same car. First run as a Torino in '71 with Jeff Hawkins. After that changed to a Mercury Cyclone to be driven by Howard and eventually Junior Crouch.

pawn stars and goodyear tire

General

I watched this show.

The #3 being added to the signature was only part of why the expert thought it was fake.

Looking at what your pics todayand remembering back to last night, I also think the signature on the tire looked fake.

Nowadays the only time I'd believe a signature is real is when I witness it.

NEED HELP With Tracking History of a Early / Mid-70s Banjo Mathews Ford/Mercury

General

I picked up this Mercury Montego bodied Banjo built car several years ago. I've decided to try tracking down its race history.

I took it up to Asheville so Boscoe Lowe and Jerry(?) Donahue (both ex-Banjo employees) to look at. Theyverified it asBanjo built car. It's a Fordframe with a Holman-Moody front clip, as they were built back then.

I bought the car out off Piedmont, SC. Previous owner wasButch Moore, at that time ran a salvage yard in Anderson, SC, and then one in northern, GA. I think he has one now near Lexington, SC now.

He told me that the car originally had a '73 Torino body on it and was rebodied with a '76 Mercury Montego, which it has now. He also mentioned that Roy Tyner drove the car on super speedways. But asking questions with the Tyner Pontiac bunch at the recent Darlington Festival produced no answers.

I was also told the car might've was run with a red color, then changed to blue.

Another lead was the name of Thackston Garage in Enoree or Woodruff, SC. I was told there was a Tony and/or Rhett Thackston that used to race the Permatex 300 from there. But I haven't found a listing for either name in the phone directory. I might be spelling the name wrong.

Anyway, any leads or help would be appreciated. Ya' can call 864-430-1932 if needed.

Thanks,

Frank Hager
