Penalties...Wait maybe NASCAR should read this.

Stock Car Racing History

Seems that NASCAR is contradicting themselves. While driving home today I was thinking about the penalties handed out and thought I had remembered where NASCAR had said it was OK to have a cell phone in the car. So once here Igoggledit and look what I found.

NASCAR: Brad Keselowski's phoneOK

Updated:February 28, 2012, 8:37 PM ET

Associated Press

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- NASCAR said Tuesday Brad Keselowski can keep his cellphone in his race car during events, and all drivers are encouraged to use social media.

Keselowski drew worldwide attention for posting on Twitter during a red-flag period in Monday night's season-opening Daytona 500. He posted pictures, answered questions and kept fans informed of what was happening during the stoppage that lasted just over two hours.

The tweeting gained Keselowski roughly 140,000 followers during the race.

But there was concern having a phone violated NASCAR rules. Teams are prohibited from having recording devices in the car that are not for competition purposes, and two-way communication devices are supposed to be analog only.

NASCAR said Keselowski had not violated any rules and can keep his phone.

"NASCAR will not penalize Brad Keselowski for his use of Twitter during last night's Daytona 500," NASCAR said in a statement. "Nothing we've seen from Brad violates any current rules pertaining to the use of social media during races. As such, he won't be penalized. We encourage our drivers to use social media to express themselves as long as they do so without risking their safety or that of others."

Fire destroys Marlin’s garage, race cars

Stock Car Racing History

Welding sparks ignited a gas leak at an automotive garage owned by retired NASCAR driver Sterling Marlin, causing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage and burning three race cars inside, Marlin said.

The 2,500-square-foot garage in the 900 block of Mahon Road was destroyed, as were the cars, Maury County Fire Chief Mark Gandee said.

Marlin said the three cars belonged to his son-in-law Michael House, who intended to drive them in Nashville. Marlin estimated that the fire caused about $300,000 in damage.

Firefighters were called to the scene about 9 a.m. Friday. Smoke could be seen from several miles away, Gandee said. An investigation revealed a gas leak inside the building was ignited by welding sparks.

I guess what happened was there was a leak on a propane heater, and it just sparked up and took the whole building, Marlin said Friday.

Crews worked to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby buildings and fuel tanks, Gandee said.

A shop worker, who was inside when the fire started, was treated by Emergency Medical Services at the scene for minor injuries. He drove himself to Maury Regional Medical Center for further treatment, Gandee said.

No other injuries were reported.

Sad News - Chris Economaki passes away

Stock Car Racing History

The Dean of American Motorsports Journalism has died. Chris Economaki, who began selling single copies of National Speed Sport News at age 14 and eventually became the publication's editor, a position he held for 60 years, died early [Friday] morning at age 91. His column, the Editor's Notebook, was the most read feature in National Speed Sport News for six decades, and while Economaki's contribution has been minimal in recent years, the Notebook, as it is called by readers, continues to be the most meaningful read in the newspaper, which debuted in 1934 when Economaki was 13 years old. Economaki was also well known for his unique, recognizable voice, which he used first as a track announcer and later through nearly 40 years on television. He worked with ABC's Wide World of Sports, he was with CBS and ESPN, and it can be said he was one of the catalysts in bringing racing to television. It is not an oversimplification to say he knew racing and knew how to speak about it. Economaki worked races around the world for ABC through the 1983 season when he made the jump to CBS where he appeared through the mid 1990s. He also worked worldwide Formula One telecasts for ESPN in 1987 and 1988. Through the years Economaki has received countless awards including the NASCAR Award of Excellence, and been elected to numerous Halls of Fame, most notably the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America, National Sprint Car Hall of Fame and National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame. He was preceded in death by his wife Tommye and is survived by his two daughters - Corinne and Tina - and two grandchildren. Arrangements are pending.( National Speed Sport News )(
