Question of the day for March 21, 2011

General

There are many starsand significant contributing drivers in every decade, but the 2 who come to mind during the decade of the '60s are Richard Petty and David Pearson. Also, although he wasn't around for the whole decade, Fireball Roberts was very significant to the sport, as well............as was Junior Johnson. It's very difficult to narrow it down to just 1 driver, but if I had to, I would have to give the nod to Richard Petty.

Question of the day for March 20, 2011. Subjective.

General

Not trying to give a short answer here............but Bill France, Sr. certainly comes to mind & the reasons are pretty well documented. However, I suspect you were talking about a driver who continued to be active throughout the '50s.

Writer Fired For Showing Emotion

General

That is just wrong and I would boycott the organization that made that decision. There are three particular times in my memory when the commentators exhibited emotionalism when drivers were approaching the finish line...............when Dale Jarrett's dad, Ned, was announcing at the Daytona 500 and Dale was about to win, when Michael Waltrip was about to win the 2001 Daytona 500 and DW was announcing, and when Mikey was about to win the truck race at Daytona a couple of weeks ago and, again, DW was announcing. I don't recall either of them being fired at those times.

ONCE APON A TIME THERE WAS THIS KID THAT-------------------

Current NASCAR

I was there and happy for Trevor and the Woods Brothers team. Today was like a fairy tale and it couldn't have happened to a nicer kid or a more deserving team than the Woods - they have been there since the beginning............through thick and thin. I remember the glory days when David Pearson and Cale Yarbrough drove that car - and this one has been a long time coming. Congratulations to them all.

The #88 and the #18

Current NASCAR

I agree with many of your posts, Johnny, but I have to take exception to one statement you made here. I don't believe Jr.'s stepmother turned on him and Kelley. DEI was built by Dale, Sr. and Teresa, and I believe Jr. and Kelley (mostly Kelley) were demanding things which they weren't entitled to. I believe Dale, Sr. and Teresa envisioned that their company (DEI)would provide nicely for all of their children and that the two of them would never have allowed two of the children (Dale, Jr. and Kelley) to acquire an unequal (and undeserved) share compared to the other two children.

Bud Shootout? More like Dancing with the Stars!

General

Well said, Tommy......and you're right, we all love the sport. Otherwise, we wouldn't even be on this website. The memories of "way back when" are wonderful and I wouldn't take anything for them. And yes, I'll be watching on Sunday.....not even on TV, but at the track. And I'm sure I'll be watching next year and thereafter.....for as long as I'm able - because it runs through my veins and always will. However, as I've stated before, I still believe NASCAR has made some changes over the last 6-8 years which I don't see as beneficial to the sport............the biggest of which is the "Chase" format, and some other changes to a lesser degree. I could just never bring myself to agree with that one............just my opinion. Beyond that, the sport has evolved into something very different from what I remember from the '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s............and I recognize that change is inevitable as parts and safety measures improve. I suppose one thing I wish NASCAR would consider is to not try fixing things "that ain't broke". If I could make one prediction of changes to come, I will predict that NASCAR will scrap the "Chase" format in the future - I just hope I'm still here to see it.

Bud Shootout? More like Dancing with the Stars!

General

I guess it could be referred to as a high-speed dance. Ryan Newman said he really couldn't tell the difference between 196 and 206, said the higher speed didn't bother him. It would be nice if we could see some real racing instead of these high-speed drafting exercises..........maybe make the race cars less aerodynamic?

RacersReunion Top 50 Crew Chief Challenge Results

Stock Car Racing History

I'd have a hard time arguing against any CCor the order on this list............with maybe 3-4 placements on the bottom half of the list; but when you're talking about 50 people, there's always going to be a few question marks here and there. That said, there's a ton of talent represented here, and for the most part, fairly accurately ranked............in my opinion.

Whats the point...

General

It's been a huge part of my life over the past 40-50 years, too, Bumpertag; but I don't believe that most of these people are intentionally trying to put the sport in a negative light. We all love the sport......to the point of being passionate about it. Many of us have such lasting and great memories (in my case going back to the '62 Atlanta 500 & '63 Daytona 500 and so, so many since then) of the '60s,'70s,'80s,'90s, and '00s of NASCAR racing (including dirt tracks). It's because we love the sport as we do that we tend to get protective of what created all these great memories for us. I don't believe there's a single person posting here who would be unwilling to make sacrifices in order to strengthen the sport. As with any organization, there are times when even management seems to get led down some wrong pathways............for various reasons. Although many of the recent comments might seem negative, I believe the hope and intent is to try to create some positive suggestions which could help strengthen the sport, improve the ratings, and improve track attendance. I'm just a little voice in a big crowd, but that has certainly been my intent. There's nothing I would love better than to see NASCAR racing return to the glory days.
