The race movies and the people were great............now those were race fans. Thanks, Wally - didn't know I'd ever see these pictures again.

Does anyone here have any memories of Mac's Famous Bar on A1A in Daytona Beach?

WHAT I HEARD ON THE LOCAL NEWS THIS MORNING

Current NASCAR

I have to believe that BZF and friends have really had their heads in the sand for the last several years. As PattyKay alluded to, if Bill France, Jr. had set out to pick one person with the specific instruction to "do everything you can do to destroy NASCAR", he could not have made a better pick than Brian France. Unless this upcoming press conference specifically addresses the real problems which Brian & his merry men have created in the past several years, i.e., the "Chase", the top 35, the "lucky dog", the "start & parkers", etc., then I fear that good NASCAR racing (as Bill, Sr. & Bill, Jr. envisioned) will become a distant memory & will continue to travel down that "declining interest" road which we have seenduring the BZF era.

I am in favor of anything that kills that joke called the "Chase". However, as you, and many others have said, it only makes sense to give bonus points forspecific achievements such as winning, most laps led, pole positions, etc. After all, isn't racing supposed to be about performance? I particularly liked Pkl's suggestion about 0 points for positions 36-43 and 0 points for running less than 2/3 of a race (excepting mechanical failure & wrecks). If taken out by mechanical failure or wreck before the 2/3 point, the driver could receive the finishing position points plus whatever other performance points he/she may have earned. This might require a little tweeking, but the idea is to eliminate the "start & parkers".

NASCAR Trending report using Goggle research

Current NASCAR

And this is surprising?? As I have stated many times, I believe the "Chase" is one of the very worst brainstorms NASCAR has had in recent years. I think there are many people (especially veteran race fans) who do not believe that the "Chase" championship formatis truly representaative of a season-long championship. I believe the point system should be revamped such that a race winner gets extra bonus points (that is still the objective of racing, isn't it?), leading the most laps gets bonus points, and maybe pole winners getting a few bonus points. All of those are obviously performance points......which should be what the fans want to see............and the season championship would be based on these performance points, not on which driver can do the best in the last 10 races. I realize that it takes a level of consistency & performance for 12 drivers to qualify for the "Chase", but it never has seemed right and there's something about the phrase, "remember the big picture", that just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Drivers should be racing to win in every race and should be rewarded for their performance over the whole season.

A twist in voting--The LEAST popular Driver list

Trivia

If there's one thing in particular I notice about this list...............it may be a list of who got the most votes as unpopular driver, but there's an awful lot of talent represented here............and the best of the group just could be that guy at the top of the list.

Out with the Old and in with the New

Current NASCAR

Good one, Johnny, and I do like the scenario you're presenting here. I, too, believe we have the ingredients for a great season of Cup racing..................IF NASCAR will do their part. As I have mentioned before, there are many ideas and decisions by NASCAR which I believe have been detrimental to the sport. I'm not going to go through that list again............with one exception. In my opinion, the single most advantageous & beneficial thing NASCAR could do to greatly improve the picture would be to revamp the point system, i.e., eliminate the Chase and create a point system which awards drivers bonus points for winning races and is representative of season-long performance.I believe there are many drivers who are potential contenders for a championship in 2011. In addition to the ones you mentioned, I would probably throw Clint Bowyer's name into the mix, as well. At any rate, I do hope that clear minds will prevail at NASCAR and we will see a much-improved picture in 2011.

That's great news, Jeff............thanks, also, for all that you do - especially for keeping alive all the memories of what the sport used to be.
