Help Identify The Track & Drivers In These Old Photos

Historic Speedways and Ghost Tracks

I came across these photos in a restaurant in Winston-Salem. They are labeled Peace Haven Speedway, but three extremely reliable sources told me they definitely are not Peace Haven.

The main clue is the fence. Peace Haven had a fence that spanned the edge of the track from the start of turn two, to the end of turn three, then went away from the track and around the back of the spectators areas from the start of turn four to the end of turn one. The fence had the bracing on the outside where it met the track, and only had bracing on the inside (like in these photos) where it went away from the track. There was no vegetation were the fence met the track at Peace Haven.

Also, there are drivers names written on the photos, but are they correct?

Regardless of where these are really from, they are very cool photos...

why I post picture and clippings

General

I too share the sentiments of the posts above, and thank you for posting your treasures, Harvey. We all have our hometown tracks that we like to focus our memories on, but it's so great to read about other tracks and memories that we may have otherwise known nothing about. And it all ties together at some point in the big picture of racing history. As a side note, I have had wonderful luck digging up the history of my local tracks at my public library. The micro-film of the old newspapers has become a treasure chest of Ads, photos, and articles of the old tracks still here, or long gone.Keep the treasures coming!

Ghost Tracks: Peace Haven Speedway

Historic Speedways and Ghost Tracks

Bobby, I really enjoyed the show! Yes, the Flickr pages are mine. I grew up near the site of the speedway and never knew about it until last year, so I had to dig up the history. I spent a lot of time at the library and on the phone, and really had a blast doing the research. All the research you've done on so many tracks is a real inspiration, too.I'd really like to have a copy of that article you read on Peace Haven about it being a motorcycle track in the early '40s. It mentioned Paul Burke and the Burke family. I talked to Mr. Burke and he's a really nice man. He still lives near the site of the track. Can you make me a copy of that article?

Twin Lakes Speedway

General

Edgar, thanks being here to fill in some info.

Here are a few questions for you -

1) What was your Grandfather's name?

2) What years did it run from first race to last?

3)What was the length of the track?

4) What divisions did it run, and were any races NASCAR sanctioned?

5) Who were some of the drivers that ran there?

6) Why did it close down?

Also, any remarkable stories about any of the races would be interesting.
