For all you Kart racing fans

General

Tonight's Legendtorial, written this past Saturday, will address the issue of kids in racing. Although probably woefully inadequate, I felt the need to express my opinion. Hope to see you all listening Tonight (Tuesday, May 29th) at 7:00 p.m.

YOU WIN SOME YOU LOOSE SOME and SOME YOU BREAK

Current NASCAR

Not so sure about that Johnny. Have to wait and see what the rest of the season will be like. I continue to be shocked about the inability of Dale, Jr. to win in a Hendrick car.

Sunco Commercial

Current NASCAR

Yes sir! That is one of the commercials that gets muted in our house. That one and those anti-smoking commercials that use folks with holes in their throat, or missing fingers and limbs, or having her son bathe her because she had a stroke from smoking. But truly that Sunoco commercial is as disgusting as they come. Then, as I sit here this morning the the radio on, I listen to the most disgusting car dealer I've ever encountered, who advertising on radio and television non-stop say "what better way to spend Memorial Day than shopping fora new car a J.T.'s Dodge-Jeep-Chrysler?". If that is the way he feels, maybe he should go find a life in Pakistan. I would walk, or ride my bike before I would buy a car from him if he were the last car dealership on earth. This weekend he has been open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. including Sunday and all day today. Absolutely disgusting.

50 Years Ago at CMS, a 40something Tank Driver Had the Boy Scouts Cheering

Stock Car Racing History

I really liked Nelson Stacy. When I was in high school, there were a couple race fans there with me in the 10th grade (by my senior year there were many, many more, funny how that happened). Bobby Riley and I were the two fans in the same psychology class. The teacher was talking about things that make the mind work in certain ways. She got on the subject of colors and kids were asking here what certain colors meant. She explained blue meant calm, green meant something, so on and so on. Someone asked was yellow meant and Ms. Wilson said "speed". Bobby and I both shouted out "Nelson Stacy"!How well I remember that. The rest of the class didn't know what we were talking about but Bobby and I laughed the rest of the way through high school about that.

The Legend's New Clothes

General

Dave, I sincerely appreciate you watching out of my appearence in public and I do realize that there are times when more than the cowboy hat and boots are required for proper dress. I was tipped off about DW Clothiers when I was in Mooresville so I stopped off on the way home from the North Carolina Auto Racing Hall of Fame to order some custom suits for future appearences. I ordered an electric blue one, a banana yellow one, a lavender one (same color as the Ford Fireball won the '63 Southern 500), and a white one. They are to be ready in two weeks. Oh, and the car parked beside me at the NC Auto Racing Hall of Fame had a license plate "DW-1". When I saw that I immediately went back inside to find him but there was no D.W. in there. Either that or he was hiding.

So, Dave, I do so appreicate that you care enough about my appearence to offer helpful suggestions. I can only guess that you fear being embarrassed my me if you and I are seen together at the event in Hillsborough later this year. I promise not to embarrass you. You can pretend you don't know me.

Have a good, safe weekend, and "Boogity, boogity, boogity".

larry manning cup driver-1942-2012

Stock Car Racing History

It is always sad to have one of our racing family pass. Every time I ever talked to Larry, he was very gracious, and that was back when he was racing. When I encountered him at the Columbia Speedway event, he was the consummate Southern Gentleman. Prayers of comfort for the family.

Tire Tests Were Bad Luck for Burton-Robinson Construction Co. Drivers Pardue & Thomas

Stock Car Racing History

I remember hearing the news of both Jimmy Pardue and Larry Thomas' deaths. I had "known" both of the drivers because I always tried to hang around the Mopar drivers and did so when not hanging around Richard. Both Jimmy and Larry were fine men, in my opinion, and I remember Jimmy as being the quiet racer.

If you recall, Jimmy died after going through the guardrail and out of the track at Charlotte in September, 1964. Just a few weeks later was the National 400 at that track. I was parked in the infield in turns three and four when, on the last lap while leading Lorenzen, Richard blew a right front tire and slammed that guardrail really hard. After the race, we were in the garage area talking with Richard when on of the NASCAR officials walked up and told him that he hit in almost the exact spot Jimmy had gone through the rail and that the track had reinforced the rail all through the turn three-four area. The official speculated that had not the reinforcement been done, it would have been Richard going out of the track. Of course, you never know what strange set of circumstances causes things to happen on this earth, but I've always remembered that conversation.

Burton-Robinson was a first class operation. If you ever get the chance, watch the first 10 laps of the 1964 Daytona 500 and watch for that red number 54.
