Just wait!

Administrative

Ok, folks. For all of you who listen to the Tuesday night radio show "Racing Through History", you know that Jeff allows me to run off at the mouth for about 10 minutes each week in something called "The Legendtorial". I usually write the segment on Sunday afternoon, usually after the Cup race but most of the ones for the past five or six weeks have been about the wonderful things that Racers Reunion and the members are doing to keep the heritage of the sport alive. Here it is only Thursday night and certain things in discussion the past couple days about certain things going on in NASCAR have me stirred up. I will NOT write the Legendtorial tonight because the tone would surely be one of abject abuse. I will, however, allow myself to consider all sides, and then on Sunday afternoon I will write an easier to swallow version unless something else happens between now and then to change my mind. I forewarn you, however, that even with the "toned down version" it is sure to offend some. But, then again, I don't have a reputation for being politically correct in most circumstances. But I am always The Legend.

IS IT HOW YOU WIN?? Really is it

Current NASCAR

A win is a win, Johnny, as you well know. I'm not a fan of fuel mileage racing, but whatever it takes. I remember, throughout the years when many gambles were taken to win. Remember the 1980 Daytona 500 when Buddy Baker gambled on the pit stop for just enough fuel. The King did that a couple years later for his last Daytona 500 win. Gamble on no tires, two tires, four tires. We all know that is part of the game. I would suspect we will see many more such gambles this year, sometimes a winner, sometimes a loser, but still a gamble.

Great to have you back on the keyboard!!!! You are missed around here.

Randy, I am already committed for another appearance on the 13th and 14th. When will the next event happen?

Randy, you did not sound at all rude! I deeply appreciate you in many respects. I was at BOTH ARCA events at The Rock and loved them, absolutely loved them. But, you are correct, there was no one there at either event. The point I was trying to make is that if people down here are exposed to ARCA in several venues and get to know the drivers, then we have something! It is quite a competitive series, as you know, and loaded with talented drivers with some great personalities that big dollars haven't spoiled yet. Keep doing what you're doing Randy. But,if they have another ARCA race at The Rock, please join me there.

The Other Side of NASCAR

General

It is such a sad thing, so sad. I realize that I can't bring back my youth, I can't bring back the energy I had when I was 25, not even 35. I had hoped there would be a way to bring back at least a shadow of what was, but I see, all to clearly, that will never be. Jeff is far more educated than I in such things and he has stated it plainly. The others here have made very valid and strong points. I know my only hope is the local track which I hope, throughout the country, will find a great fan base and present races that are as they were. I would love to see the ARCA series compete in the Southeast. I could handle being at those races. They can start with Rockingham, North Wilkesboro, and maybe even take a Labor Day Weekend trip to Darlington. There are dreams. I have plenty. Most will never come true but it doesn't stop me from dreaming.

"Racing Through History", May 3: Harold Brasington, III

General

I had the honor and privilege of spending two hours with Harold Brasington back in 1994 as he told me the complete story of his involvement with Darlington. I had intended to write about him but almost everything he told me had been written and told so many times. He was a very kind man and one of the things I remember so well is how soft-spoken he was. I will be looking forward to hearing what his son has to say! Thanks, Bopper, for getting him to share his memories.

NASCAR Hall Of Fame Biography - Ned Jarrett on Speed

Current NASCAR

That is two times this week (Winston Kelley on Racing Through History) and then your song at the HOF, that Racers Reunion is being recognized by NASCAR albeit a backdoor recognition. Look how far you've come!!!
