YOU CALLED MY MAMA A "WHAT"

General

As Jeff Gilder is fond of quoting from NASCAR, "It is our circus and we choose the clowns". Problem now seems to be the entire organization is either attending Clown School (which is held in the South Carolina Legistlature from January to June each year) or they have already graduated with honors. In spite of what NASCAR puts in the press for public comsumption, you know very well that BZF has had to change his diapers 30 times since last Saturday night from excitement.

JUST ANOTHER HEARTBREAK FOR THE OLD TIMERS

Stock Car Racing History

I have just a little earlier learned that the efforts to save North Wilkesboro Speedway have failed. I received a call concerning a committment I had made to be there this weekend for the event scheduled and was told there would be no event. I went to the "Save The Speedway" site for North Wilkesboro and the notice is very eloquently set forth on that site that the efforts to save that wonderful facility are ended. It is no more.

Having attended two of the events there, and planning on being there this weekend is devastating news for this old timer. Just when I begin to believe in the magic of wishes and dreams coming true (i.e. Daytona and Darlington) through all we accomplish here at Racers Reunion, this is a tremendous blow to me. I cannot believe the empty feeling inside of me right now.

I hope and pray that the efforts made by this site and the loyal members who support it will continue in ways that make us all proud. To have North Wilkesboro come as far as it has and to end it now leaves me without further words.

Tim

IT FEELS SO GOOD

General

Thanks for the correction. I always appreciate it when credit is given to the proper person/company/group. I sincerely appreciate you pointing out the proper car owner as Furniture Row.

IT FEELS SO GOOD

General

Darlington is the track I first ventured to in 1957 when Uncle Bobby decided it was time to graduate from the quartermile and half mile dirt tracks we attended every week and actually check out Darlington,. That was the spring race of 1957, convertibles on the track. I was 11 and that was many years ago but that memory is so fresh. I missed only a hand full of races from 1957 through 2004 when NASCAR decided tradition was no longer important and neither were the older fans like me who had given a lifetime of support to the sport. Nevertheless, I still must watch all the races from Darlington as it holds a very special place in my heart.

This year's Southern 500, although not the same as the Labor Day weekend tradition of the same name, was a good race and was, more or less, a typical Darlington race. I do dislike the end results with Kevin and Kyle, but things happen. What I did like was seeing the 27 year old driver climb from the Furniture Row Motorsports Chevy, sponsored by Denver Mattress as a winner. And Trevor Bayne won the Daytona 500. Two young, unknown drivers, in what are, at best second or third tier cars. But what a great feeling.

Growing up in Columbia, SC, I remember several local shops and gas stations had race cars they worked on during the week and raced on Thursday, Friday or Saturday nights. I remember guys like Lil Bud Moore, Sam Sommers, Tiny Lund, Cale Yarborough , Joe Penland, and others making the climb from the local tracks to the big time. I remember hanging out at the small shop by Owens Field where the number 55 of Tiny Lund was built. I remember going over to Camden and hanging out at Bondy Long's shop where Ned Jarrett's cars were built. We were in the way, I'm sure, but we were always treated very well although we were merely teens at the time.

I remember when it was my dream, and the dream of so many of my peers I hung around with to be in the Winner's Circle at Darlington, or even to drive there. I remember we raced bicycles on tracks built all over the community all the time pretending those bikes were cars and we were doing the things on the tracks our heroes were doing on Sunday afternoons.

Somewhere, not sure when or how, racing lost all that. It was big buck teams, haulers for the cars that cost more than an entire race team needed to run the season in the 60s.

and it seemed the little guy and the little teams were out. Even in the Nationwide now, the little teams seem to be at a huge disadvantage although Danny Efland and Timmy Hill, two young drivers in whom I have a big interest, did well at Darlington

it just seems that unless you're a part of four or five of the huge teams, you go out and ride around until you blow, are wrecked, or decide you've made as much as you can make for that day and park it.

To see Trevor win Daytona was awesome. To see Reagen win Darlington was not only awesome but quite inspirational. He did it! Furniture Row Motorsports did it! Frankly, watching the crew celebrate as the checked flag fell was sort of odd because it seemed as if they really didn't understand what was involved in celebration. It was probably the truest form of celebration since Dale Earnhardt won his Daytona 500.

The days of the small garages, the open trailers, are gone forever. The dreamshowever, of people like the young Bayne and Smith live on. Something very special about that. Dreams do come true sometimes. Even those of an old man watching the race from a recliner in his den who had the hope and audacity to dream, in those last few laps, that the young guy who didn't even stop to get new tires could win. Then to see him slap the wall on that last lap and hold it with his foot in the carburator and held on. Then to see that car coming off number four with Carl Edwards not close enough to even challenge brought this old man out of his chair, on his feet, stifling a loud cheer because Ann was already asleep. It felt good. It still feels good today.

There are those who will talk long and loudly about Kyle and Kevin. So be it. I would rather talk about how Carl Edwards was so gracious in defeat and so complimentary of Smith. I admit I've had my problems with Duck Boy but he sure impressed me Saturday night. Also to see Brad Keselowski and Greg Biffle congratulating the winner in Victory Lane overcame the stupid shenanigans of the two at the end of pit road looking for valet parking.

I hope to see more of these little guys winning races. I want to see more of the true racers coming to the front and realizing a dream. To Dream The Impossible Dream was a great song from the "Man of Lamancha" but it does seem to fit well in the cotton and peanut fields of South Carolina on a Mother's Day weekend.

LATEST DIRECTIVE FROM THE SANCTIONING BODY

General

It was announced by the head of state for the sanctioning body late this afternoon that all Grand Marshals of events shall no longer intone "Gentlemen, start your engines" as this would be an improper entitlement of Kyle Busch, Kurt Busch, Juan Paublo Montoya and others yet to be decided. Henceforth, the only proper way to fire the engines is "Drivers, start your engines". But, wait! It is possible that some of the ones sitting in those cars can't even qualify as drivers.

I shall await the next directive to come down. I am suspecting it will have to do with failure to properly park your car on pit road when getting out to discuss parking protocol with the guy behind you.

Kyle Busch's smartest move yet as quoted by racewin

Current NASCAR

In my humble opinion, there is no way Kyle could take Kevin in a street fight. I doubt Kyle could take Delana in a street fight. But Kyle was chewing Doublemint gum Saturday night and could have caused a sticky situation there. I understand that Kyle was conciliatory in the NASCAR big truck and wished Kevin a "Happy Mother's Day", or something like that.

A FURNITURE COMPANY AND A NEW YORK YANKEE

Current NASCAR

A most sincere congratulations to the Furniture Row team and Mr. Smith. Needs to have a movie made "Mr.Smith Goes to Victory Lane". Obviously he can drive, he qualifies well and he did win at Talladega but for the "yellow line". I was really pulling for him but really didn't think he would hold off Carl and having seen Carl launch Brad at Atlanta last year I was trying to determine just where he was going to launch Regan into the wall. My compliments to Carl for racing him clean but, could he even get close enough to launch him? Didn't look to me like he could.

As for the Harvick-Busch incident, I wasn't in either car, obviously, but I do think Kyle was a little too over reactive to what I saw happen and then watched even more closely during the replays. The first Harvick-Busch brush earlier that lap was simply Darlington racing. The next incident was Bowyer trying to make it three wide coming out of the turn and the Harvick bump to Busch was the result of being pushed into him by Bowyer. Kyle came out swinging which, considering the price of the equipment ruined was sort of stupid, if you ask me. I do have to say, however, that there is a stop sign in our neighborhood that the same woman has "run" twice in the past 6 months and when I have to slam on the brakes to keep from hitting her, and then SHE flips me off, I can understand why he did it. Driver agression. One day I'm going to forget to step on the brakes and she'll be called to the "office".

And, I hate to get on this soapbox again, but I swear if FOX doesn't do something with that D.W. and his mouth, inane, stupid, ridiculous comments, I am going to refuse to watch the races period. He exceeded his usual level of disgust with me last night.

A GOOD ARTICLE WRITTEN ABOUT A GREAT DRIVER IN NORTH GA

I'm going to read it now Johnny. Your recommendation spurs me in that direction.I must admit a little surprise that people in Georgia can read.

Current NASCAR

Johnny, you and I had "sign language" that worked quite well. Oh, and your post here is interesting because it is a part of what I am planning for the upcoming Legendtorial on Tuesday, if there is still a segment for a Legendtorial.
