Give Earnhardt Jr. credit for a good season so far.

General

Very good point Tommie! Although I don't remember being a naysayer as such last year, I have often questioned whether or not Junior would be in a race car were it not for him being an Earnhardt. But you are so right! We (including me, maybe especially me) are quick to jump on the "downer side" and not equally as quick to climb on the "up side". I do wish Junior well and I would be thrilled to see him win the title for himself and for the Earnhardt name. Thanks for writing and posting this one.

IN A HIDDEN CORNER SOMEWHERE OUT OF SIGHT

General

My local newspaper, "The State", actually had a full page in the sports section today about stock car racing. One corner was the advertisement for the upcoming Southern 500 at Darlington May 7th (it still riles me that they call any race NOT run at Darlington on Labor Day the Southern 500). There was a short story of how Carl Edward won in Nashville which was more directly slanted to the fact that Kyle Busch did NOT win the race. It is somewhat comical now that whomever wins the race must justify thatwin by where Kyle Busch finished. At least no Sam Bass guitars were smashed this time. In fact, Carl now has five guitars. Maybe he needs to give one to Billy Biscoe just to honor the picking skills of Mr. Biscoe. The remainder of that entire page consists of a very prominent picture of The King in a suit and tie with his trademark cowboy boots in keeping with his imitation of The Legend, and a story about how Wendell Scott has NOT even been nominated for NASCAR's Hall of Fame.

The main crux of the Hall of Fame story is that no one is coming, or very few are coming, and that NASCAR is going to have to go back to the City of Charlotte and ask for more money to keep the place going. There is also an ongoing argument from Atlanta, GA, officials that if the Hall had been built in Atlanta, there would be no such attendance problems.

First, please allow me to address the Wendell issue. I was watching Wendell race from the very beginning of his Grand National career. This was back in the day when the "N word" was the only designation for someone of his race but Wendell could have passed for a deeply tanned caucasian man. Someone said to me, when Racers Reunion was inducting Wendell into the Memory Lane Racers Reunion Hall of Fame that the blue eyes would often allow Wendell to pass as the white man that was prominent in the sport both as competitors and fans, and that he would often time have his sons stay outside the track as they were obviously black. I remember when Wendell was not allowed to race at Darlington because of his race. I remember when I just simply could not understand such a thing as, to me, Wendell Scott was a race driver and the other "race" issue didn't enter my thoughts in that regard. I am thankful to belong to an organization like Racers Reunion that honors the achievements and sacrifices of true pioneers like Wendell Scott. Rarely have I been more graciously greeted by anyone as I have been my Mary and Sybil Scott. Obviously, they believe the colors of race involve green starting flags and the black and white checkered flag. Sort of symbolic, don't you think, that the winner receives a flag of combined black and white checkers? Sort of indicates a winning situation, huh?

Now, as to the Hall of Fame. I have blogged this, forumed (is that a word) this, and I believe even Legendtorialized my thoughts on this. I will not belabor the issue addressed by so many others here that to induct only five per year is ludicrious, stupid, assinine, but, typical NASCAR. When I read that it is being done this way to insure and constant flow of publicity for the sport it sort of fit the mold of what I have come to expect from the pursuit of the almighty dollar. Unfortunately, the management of NASCAR believe that the typical race fan lacks education and knowledge to understand even the most simple of ruses used to milk any situation. Think back to the first Daytona 500. Instead of getting the Monday morning headline of Lee Petty winning the first 500, Big Bill was able to milk out almost a week's worth of publicity as photos were examined and re-examined to determine the winner. Think what Big Bill could have done with social media sites like we have today! I shutter to think.

I have said I will visit the NASCAR Hall of Fame, and I intend to do so. In fact, I'll do that very soon because I have vowed never to set foot in the place when D.W. goes in. I think to have D.W. inducted anytime before the year 2088 would be a cruel injustice to the sport. There is more to being a Hall of Fame qualified individual than winning 84 races. Ask him about the trophy for the Snowball race in Tampa he refused to return when it was determined he had not won the race. Ask him about all the cars he raced knowing the cars were illegal in so many ways. Yes, yes, I realize that "cheating" in NASCAR is as common as changing the Goodyear tires and filling up with Sunoco Racing Fuel during a 500 mile race, but don't go around preaching the Gospel and thumping the Bible as if you should be wearing a halo while knowing all that is going on with your cheating. Would he have won 84 times with a legal car? 54 times?

I will visit the Hall of Fame. I want to see how NASCAR presents the history of the sport I grew up supporting, enjoying, and truly allowing it to be such a huge part of my life. Besides, someone whose opinion I value very much, Billy Biscoe, supports the Hall and believes everyone should visit. If Billy Biscoe tells me I should see it, I'm going and I'll probably spend the day there. However, if Billy Biscoe says I should reconsider my opinion of D.W., then Billy and I are going to have to have a really serious discussion.

So, Charlotte, stand by. NASCAR will be knocking on your door for more money to operate the museum. The fact you were told by NASCAR that you could expect over 800,000 visitors the first year and less than 200,000 showed up should show you that NASCAR's estimation of its worth is in the eyes of those who can not only estimate a crowd at a race track but can't even count the number of people there when they sold the tickets to the event. Speaking of which, the advertisement for the Saturday night Southern 500 at Darlington has many concessions to ticket prices. Sort of a "stimulous package" offered by one of the NASCAR Czars to drive the masses to the facility. Granted, most races at Darlington are pretty good races, but The Southern 500 belongs in the daylight on Labor Day weekend. I'll never give up that fight. NASCAR, you were wrong to eliminate that tradition. But, being the devine power you think you are, you won't allow yourself to admit a mistake. That's ok, though Brian, we'll admit it for you. I would call you an idiot, but that title is already reserved for the rhodent loving big mouth FOX network hired to destroy the television ratings.

Happy Resurrection Day to ALL on Racers Reunion

General

Thanks, Ken. I have often thought of the fact that something EMPTY could mean so much to mankind. Ann and I will be heading out to our Easter service at 10:30 and we will celebrate that empty tomb and what it means. God bless.

NASCAR Legends by Robert Edelstein, a "Must Read"

General

Robert Edelstein is a member of Racers Reunion who also happens to be the exclusive motorsports writer for TV Guide and a contributing Editor at "Broadcasting and Cable" He has written two previous books which I have not had the pleasure of reading as yet, but will soon. Robert and I discussed his new book "NASCAR Legends, Memorable Men, Moments and Machines in Racing History". I just finished the book and I'm here to tell you that if you are a racing fan, especially a racing fan who enjoys what happens here at Racers Reunion, you need to jump on Amazon.com or whatever site you use to order your reading material and ask them to rush you a copy of the book.

Robert is quick to point out (page 11 as a matter of fact) that he was a 33 year old Jewish Kid from New York when he was asked to inteview Bobby Allison for an article for one of the publications to which he contributed. He explains that he knew nothing, or very little, about the sport, and was uncomfortable in the situation in which he found himself at the Waldorf Astoria for that interview. He attributes his love for the sport as starting with that Bobby Allison interview.

This book provides the reader with some indepth background as to Dale Earnhardt, Dale, Jr., The Petty Family, and others, but I won't attempt to tell those stories here because Robert has done a most superb job of doing so in "Legends".

Each and every Chapter of the book, indeed every page, was a true delight as memories came rushing back of so many glorious days of the sport, and some pages brought tears as the deaths of Dale, Sr. and Adam Petty were recalled, as well as the death of Davey Allison. Although practically impossible to select a favorite passage, paragraph or page, I personally read Chapter 5 twice as it was so poignant in describing the essence of racers and race fans.

So, if you want to spend some quality time reading a quality book about the NASCAR Legends, get your hands on "NASCAR Legends" by Robert Edelstein, published by The Overlook Press. I promise you won't go wrong. It's about what we do here at Racers Reunion and it is done very well. Congratulations Robert!!!

ANOTHER NIGHT TO WALK THE CAT

Current NASCAR

i tried. I really did. I had a long and boring day sitting in a conference room all day listening to meaningless discussions. I decided that last night I would sit back and watch the Camping World Truck Series from Nashville. I really like that speedway, I supposed, because it is different than the "cookie cutter" patterns we're so used to seeing. So, I kicked back, turned it on, watched Krista Voda get cake smashed into her face and all the laugher over that. Then here comes D.W. with his inane comments and a long discussion on the "ambient temperature" as if he even knows what that means. I'm sure he overheard Digger mention that once.

The race got underway and of course Kyle Busch goes to the front. All the talk was about Kyle and how he dominates everything he runs and D.W. goes on and one about how KB can take a one groove track and make it wide enough to pass.

They were talking about the Sam Bass guitar as how it is one of the most sought after trophies in all of sports. That is when I had the flash back of Kyle smashing that guitar when he won and then came up with the lame excuse he wanted all of the crew to have a piece of the guitar. Still, I was trying to hang in there.

Then D.W.started again. I am certain D.W. has visions of Kyle Busch walking across the Mississippi River, or any other body of water, and actually worships the kid. I would not be at all surprised if D.W. contacts the Pope about putting Kyle up for sainthood. I had to turn the tv off. Saw in the paper today that Kyle won. No surprise there. I did NOT see where he busted up the guitar this time.

This is not a rant against Kyle Busch. I have come to respect his driving ability and the more I learn about how he cares about many of the same things I do, I can handle his style for the most part. "It's not bragging if you can do it" fits Kyle.

But, I cannot, will not, subject my senses to anymore of that D.W. Goodbye FOX network. Goodbye Speed Network when you use D.W. to discuss ambient temperatures. Walking the cat is much more healthy for me than observing total stupidity for 2 hours.

"WILL THE REAL JEFF GILDER PLEASE STAND UP"!!!

General

Barbara, I was going to resist responding to this for fear I would go far overboard in my praise for Jeff Gilder and all he has accomplished, but after much thought, I find that I must, at the very least, join you and Robbie in your praise for Jeff. There are truly no words in my expansive vocabularly that would adequately describe all Jeff Gilder has accomplished with Racers Reunion. The Hall of Fame in Memory Lane Museum is enough, alone, but he has done so much more, a great deal of which is not even observed by the casual visitor here. For me, personally, he has my support and my admiration. He has given me a place to call home on the world wide web, the internet, or whatever they will call it in the future. He has also allowed me to encounter and be friends with the heroes of my youth, such as your husband, and many more. I would not want to enlarge the reputation of Jeff Gilder past what it is, but then, thinking about it, such enlargement would not be possible anyway.

Thanks for posting the Forum Barbara. We all owe this tireless man a most sincere thank you!!!

Thanks for the nice comment Wally. Your show last night was AWESOME. Your shows are always good but last night kept me mesmerized as you guys shared your memories. LOOK BACK, LOOK UP, LOOK AHEAD

Administrative

Ann and I just stood in our front yard at 6:20 a.m. to watch the International Space Station streak across the beautiful early morning South Carolina sky. As I came back into the house I started to think that tonight starts the Third Annual Love Chevrolet Columbia Speedway Racers Reunion. So, in a period of 90 seconds I went from the twenty-first century back to the days of the 50s and 60s when my Thursday nights consisted of trips across town to The Columbia Speedway (which did not include "Historic" in those days) to watch the rising stars of major league stock car racing compete in the dust of that hallowed piece of ground.

My thoughts went to the incredible events that have taken place in my lifetime! Froma post world war planet where space travel was only in the minds of science fiction writers to a world where you can stand in your front yard and watch a manmade space station streak across the sky in beautiful brillance that says, overall, the world is a wonderful place, in spite of so many negative things that occupy headlines and television talking heads. This weekend, those of us attending the Love Chevrolet Columbia Speedway Racers Reunion will have the opportunity to relive the simple days of stock car racing with heroes who made it happen. The stories are great, entertaining, and 99 and 44/100% true, for the most part. You do have to be a little wary of those told by Lil Bud Moore though because he likes to play with your head! All in fun, I might add.

If you missed the International Space Station pass overhead this morning, you missed an awesome sight. You still have the opportunity to experience an encounter with the Stars of stock car racing. Hope to see you at The Historic Columbia Speedway, 2001 Charleston Highway, Cayce, SC. Check the events calendar here on the main page for all the activities, which start tonight and continue through Saturday night. Oh, and if you're worried about the weather forecast for rain, don't fret, the festival goes forward regardless, although I believe the weather will not be a washout by any means. Lol, imagine that; The Legend predicting weather! But the tent is big and dry and, besides, we have rain tires.

See you all this weekend!!!!

OK, I'LL BE CALLING YOU BACK WITH THAT ANSWER IN A FEW

General

If you listened to "Racing Through History" on Zeus Radio Network last night, you probably heard my Legendtorial which mentioned the upcoming Third Annual Love Chevrolet Racers Reunion at Columbia Speedway coming up starting tomorrow, April 16, 2011, and continuing Friday evening and then all day Saturday. I am fortunate that Jeff Gilder allows me to spout off with pretty much whatever I want to on the Legendtorial part of the show and although I am one very opinionated individual, most of you regulars on here agree with me most weeks.

On the way to work this morning, just as I was getting off I-20 onto 378, I get an incoming call on my cell phone. Pleasantries were exchanged and then the zinger was "your part of the show last night was one big commercial for Love Chevrolet and the Columbia Speedway Festival". Well, "duh" what is so difficult to accept about that. That's why the show was live from the Sporting News Grill and why several folks from Racers Reunion were in attendence. Besides, it's what I wanted to talk about and because Jeff doesn't require I get pre-approval (at least not yet) I can say what I please!!!!

But the issue for which I had no response at the time of the call this morning was the statement "you must be paid well by Racers Reunion". I simply laughed that off. But, I am going to return that call later today and tell that listener just how WELL I am paid.

Here's the deal. I grew up being a race fan and wanting to be a race driver. I always wanted to be a part of racing but just never could find the exact place where I "fit". Whether or not I have found that place yet is subject to conjecture, I'm sure but I'll tell you that, inmy heart, I think I have found that place right here at Racers Reunion. I am, because of Jeff Gilder and the others who have picked up the habit, known as The Legend, no quotations this time. For that, I thank Jeff and everyone.

So, when I return that call today, I will tell the party that I am paid very, very, very well and the IRS can't touch it. I make NO deposits to my bank account from Racers Reunion but when I consider the friends I have made here, the times I have here, and the fact that some of the most famous people in stock car racing history know me on sight these days and call me "Legend" can't be measured in dollars and cents. There are just somethings that are so special you can't put a price on them. Being The Legend for Racers Reunion is one of those things.

Thanks, Jeff, and everyone else who works so hard to make this site such a special place. I hope to see as many of you as can possibly make it show up at Columbia Speedway this weekend. I want to add more folks to this fine group of people.

Tim
