Trenton Speedway was the scene of a 200-mile Nascar National Championship Modified-Sportsman race on August 18th, 1963. The race was held on the 1 mile paved oval with a starting field of 43 cars. Bill Slater of Harford, CT set a new track qualifying record of 97.2 mph. Slater jumped out to an early lead, but blew his engine on the 3rd lap. Ray Hendrick, and Fats Caruso exchanged the lead several times before Caruso moved away from the field. Caruso although losing a right rear fender in the closing laps went on to take the victory. He earned $1700.00 for the win before 14,000 fans driving his 1936 Chevy Sportsman
