When Billy left the NASCAR sanctioned tracks for the "outlaw" tracks in North Carolina, his one goal was to out run Ralph Earnhardt. After he did that one time, he tried even harder each time. Ralph told Billy (after his first victory over Ralph), "Billy you're going to make it big, you have started using your head". Those words always stuck with Billy.
