Billy & Barbara Scott
Chuck Piazza and Billy Scott Run Close Clean Races At Concord Speedway 1970S'
Billy Scott and Chuck Piazza battle it out at Concord Speedway, a favorite track for many of the drivers back in the day. Understand the site is now a living community, and as one person stated,"Wonder if they know how much racing history they are sitting on"?
Added to the Billy Scott Collection
That's the old Concord track. A high end housing complex covers the site today. I bet no one who lives there has any idea of the history they are sitting on.
It's the Zamosa Acres developement. The road that weaves around the neighborhood is the same place it was when the track was there, I can cruise thru and know exactly where I am and where the track once stood. I saw the last remants of the track as it was being leveled before the houses went up, just the turn one banking was all that was left (and it was gone a few days later).The track lives on in "The Last American Hero", the dirt track scenes were filmed there.
I remember this track. Yall are taking me down memory lane. I was about 6-8 years old. Maybe Dale Sr. Started here? Does anyone know where an even older Concord track is? Hint Old Speedway drive????
billy was this you or heyward i thought it was him but i could be mistaken one things for sure theres no mistaking that grand old lady we visited every sat nite for what i feel was and is to this day the best racing in the world.
def hallowed ground for sure
I am so glad that I stumbled across this site. I'm not sure how often I'll get to check in, but I will as often as I can. I was a big dirt track fan in the early 70's. My wife and were at Metrolina every Friday night and then Concord on Saturday's. Henry Lee Furr was the promoter at both tracks when were attending. I remember seeing Billy race along with Hayward Plyler, Stick Elliot, Carl Smart, Chuck Piazza, Freddy Smith, Mike Duval in his Flintstone Flyer, and so many others. You don't see much on Jim Poston (one of the rare Ford drivers), but I remember him too. Another late model racer I remember very well (even though never a front runner) was "Shorty" Baucom. His first name is Atlas. We graduated together at Northwest Cabarrus HS in 1968. I read in one of your posts, about John Gaskey's brother being killed at the track. I think this may have happened before I was going, but I do remember hearing about it. I do remember when Henry's brother, Ralph, was killed at Concord. The date was August 31, 1974. I think that Ralph was standing on the running board of the water truck while it was moving. He fell off and was run over by the truck. I could have the exact details mixed up, but I do know he was run over by the truck. I was at the track that night. As I recall, the race wasnot cancelled. I've got so many memories of Concord and I have some 8mm film that I shot. I don't have a lot. I think some of the film footage is of the Semi-Modified class. By the way, I am one of the few that knows that it was Hayward Plyler, not Haywood Plyler. He was my third cousin, even though he never knew it.
