Kyle Petty 1st Cup Win

This is the winning car sponsor trophy presented to me representing 7-Eleven/CITGO/Chief Auto Parts (Southland Corp.) when Kyle Petty scored his first career NASCAR Winston Cup win in the Miller High Life 400 on February 23, 1986 at the half-mile asphalt Richmond Fairgrounds Raceway. Kyle was piloting the Wood Brothers #7 7-Eleven Ford Thunderbird.

The inscription reads: "To Dave Thanks for everything! Kyle Petty 7"

This was the race where Dale Earnhardt infamously hooked leader Darrell Waltrip in the waning laps and Kyle won under caution.

Richmond is still the only NASCAR venue where 3 generations of the same family have won Cup races - Lee, Richard and Kyle Petty.

An interesting side note - Alan Kulwicki was one of 4 drivers who failed to qualify for this race.

Here is the complementary winner's trophy that hangs on the wall of the Richard Petty Museum in Randleman. Fortunately it wasn't one of Kyle's trophies lost when his South Carolina beach house burned.

I bet that was a memorable event Dave - the car you were sponsoring won in your hometown!
