Smokey Yunick's Thoughts on Brian France?

General

I don't disagree with Smoke, he was there, and he was brilliant. The frustrating irony in this story (to me) is the fact that the France family became billionaires, and absolute auto racing power brokers. The family would outlast and outclass AAA, USAC, CART, the IRL and EVERY form of American championship auto racing and sports car racing. The France family has dictated the very direction of major league racing for decades....and still does. True, they've been the benefactors of fortunate timing and circumstance, but still, they've not only 'made a living' from auto racing, something generally deemedimpossible, They've amassed a huge fortune from basically nothing.

Jack Carter

General

I have received information that Racers Reunion member, Jack Carter

, has passed away. Jack succumed to blood clots which developed during

Heart by-pass surgery. I don't have any funeral information at this time. Jack's father owned and raced a series of MoPar coupes in the tidewater. Virginia area in the 1950's and '60's. The cars were usually "DeSoto Powered", #37' and were driven by

Butch Torrie.

Don't Believe Everything You Read in Racing Books by "Experts" - i.e. Humpy Wheeler's "Growing Up NASCAR"

General

Ditto, I was interested in Humpy's book, too, 'til, just recently came across several non-conforming 'facts' about Robinwood Speedway.......the flagship track that begat the storied promoter's carreer. IfGrowing Up NASCAR is correct, then the family that built the track is in error.

Nov. 3-4, 1973 - Wilson, NC - Chubby Thompkins Takes Pole, Joe Lane Takes $$$ at Southern Late Model 200 While Tiny Lund Wins 1/2 as Much at Fayetteville GN East

Stock Car Racing History

My dad, Glen Williamson, raced with Joe Lane many times at Little River, Conway, and Myrtle Beach. Joe usually ran a big-block, and he seemed to prefer the '68-69 Chevelle body, painting them a blue/yellow combination and always number 21. Several of those entrants were from 'our' area: Sam Ard, Hop Holmes, Mutt Powell, Craven Kiker, they were all very good (sadly, of that group, my dad included, only Sam Ard is still with us). We never ran at Wilson, but I was keenly aware of the prestige and significance of the Southern Late Model 200....it was a race of champions.

Chevy SS

Current NASCAR

Yep, the horse is long out of the barn on this one. Time was, a manufacturer had to produce 500 of a given model for eligibility. At some point, (1990's ?) teams were allowed to fabricate body panels. Pandora's box has been wide open ever since.
