Racers Reunion

Stock Car Racing History

A little over a year ago I ran across a site on the internet that caught my attention, litterly!! I was actually tracking down a car in North Carolina that was for sale. This site address popped up as a source of information for the car in question so I entered it and was amazed at the information I immediately saw before me.Now who is this person on the beach of North Carolina that has started this site,so off I go to dig up information on this person.Well I found a ton of information on a guy with a mentor of great knowledge for I had heard of him. Paul Lewis is a name that goes back a ways in racing. So now this Jeff Gilder guy must have his head in the right place so I go back and Join the site.Immediately I was welcomed by a name that gnawed at me in the back of my mind. Who is this and where do I know him from. A couple of weeks later his name appeared on a page of old information then it struck me,this guy was a driver I remembered from the 60's so I proceeded to dig information up on him and correct I was .Well as the year goes by there are people on here by the dozens signing up and it has blossomed into a site of unthought of proportions. There are radio shows on 4 nights a week and you can even catch a race or two being broadcast live on the weekends from a local track. You can express yourself on here as you wish as long as its not politics or profanity flavored. You want a photo of a certain driver? Look on here and its here, there is one dude in North Carolina that must have a house just for his photos the way he posts photos and all are of racing in the good days. There is some sand bug on the coast that claims to run a business but all I can see him doing is digging up old race tracks and describing them to the tee as in location and era they were in business. He must not read to well because he keeps no notes but spouts this stuff off from memory, I guess good coastal living does that to you. There is even a 12 or 13 year old monster in the mountains of North Georgia who every week has older seasoned veterans scrambling to see if what this youngster is telling is correct each week,so far he is right on. Must be the altitude in the mountains thats affecting his intake of knowledge to the good side. Then you got another problem growing within the organization, there is a steady growth of old tracks being brought back into their glory by Racers Reunion. Now there is also a hall of fame for motorsports that is somehow connected to Racers Reunion and all the while all this is going on there is a prominent core group of folks who quietly set in the dark and feed the correct information to the powers as to or when certain functions happened and who what and where it was held.So now folks I am sure there is new ground in the process of being broken by Racers Reunion, Do you care to add input as to what, where or when???? Whats your thought------??

I am doing all i can to make sure the R/R saga will last forever When a corporation such as NASCAR refuses to let a handout of information on racing in their area by another source then they are viewed as a threat, imagine that !!!! Jeff Gilder said:
Another loss in a seemingly endless string of "end of an era" news reports. Is it just me...or all our "eras" ending? Well, we have just begun this era...the RR era...and I hope it doesn't end anytime soon.

What?? No way --I know things are tough but jeesh take away an icon image on todays roads??? First car I ever had that was cool was a 63 1/2 fastback Marauder . A red one with the 406 2 4barrel engine with a 4 speed. It cost me an arm and a leg to maintain that car but boy was it a ride.----------------------memories

Too personal? Please let me know what you think.

General

Opinions are what makes for good content . Smart remarks are what makes debates happen . Jealous people are the ones who send these arrogant messages. They are only wishing they could enjoy the real life that you have both in your past and present. Our personal venue is a matter of tastes, given that thought with Bobby you only expressed the way things were back then but if they didnt catch it I heard your opinion had changed after a decade had passed, isnt that how life is?? They had a catch there that they thought would maybe foul you up or knock you off track but evidently they underestimate you. You and I thrive on people making comment in text or in person because it is second nature to debate on a subject you know as well if not better than they do. I would venture to say this person did not catch the whole audio of what was said to bring up the last tidbit of admiration you have for racing and of Bobby or anyone else thats a prior driver much less a champion..You see I drove against you back in the day and I think I can safely say you have gotten a little older and wiser but your drive is the same as it was in the 60's. We discussed things back then at length and if the tape doesnt lie we did it again in front of the camera. So big boy you blow your horn and toot your whistle because the majority of the folks on Racers Reunion enjoy our shows and I think we put a smile on their faces and a happy thought in their hearts. we are about not today but -------------------------------------------------------memories

New Kids on the block

Current NASCAR

Its been a while since I have seen the drastic change thats happening to the ratings on Nascars Grand national Series.Back a few years it was Rusty then DW then Dale and Mark and so on up until 2000. then Jeff Gordon strutted a while then Jimmy Johnson dominated the sport for four years. But now look at this year, all the players are shuffling around the ones at the top were oh so's in previous years.Does this mean there is a new trend in play in Nascar???YOU TELL ME

how to get into nascar big time

Stock Car Racing History

Bobby Hamilton's biggest break in NASCAR racing came when he was tabbed to drive a camera car for the movie Days of Thunder. It was in the fall of 1989 at Phoenix and he was in a chevrolet owned by Rick Hendrick. While the movie wasn't very good, it did introduce Tom Cruise to Nicole Kidman and give Bobby Hamilton his first big NASCAR break. For the movie, NASCAR required that the car be race-legal, even though it wasn't going to run many laps. Hamilton qualified it fifth and was running better than some people thought he should have. In fact, he led once for five laps and was among the top 10 until the film's producer told NASCAR he had enough footage. At that, NASCAR told the Hendrick team to tell Hamilton to park it.The race was Hamilton's first Winston Cup start. He was credited with finishing 32nd after completing 215 of the 300 laps around the 1-mile track. The year after the Days of Thunder gig, Hamilton ran a handful of Winston Cup races for George Bradshaw, the the full '91 (when he was Rookie of the Year) and '92 seasons for Bradshaw. He spent '93 with three Cup teams before latching on with Felix Sabates for the '94 season. That led to three years with Petty before his 1998 move to the Morgan-McClure team. Ironically, while racing for Petty, Hamilton's first NASCAR Winston Cup victory also came at Phoenix in the fall of '96."He said he had no idea the movie deal would work out like it did," Hamilton said. "Darrell Waltrip had recommended me to Rick for that one race, but that opened some people's eyes. I could have finished better than I did if they'd left me out there, but all in all, it worked out pretty good.

Do you have a favorite race of the 70s????

General

I guess my favorite race would be the last race I won in 1978 at Tri County Speedway in Alabama. It was a wild nite there because it seems like it was the last race of the season and a lot of cars were there. There were a lot of wrecks and it seems like Ijust worked my way through the wrecks into the lead. It was getting late and weather was coming but the race finished just before the rain came. Getting out of the infield was the problem, car slid off the ramps two or three times and then you had to pull up the track to go out and that really was the problem. muddy was not the name for it, it was sloppy goo. Finally we got out and crawled down the hill to the highway trying not to slid into the ditch. That night was long getting back home because it rained all night. But all in all it was the best because it was my last race I won, feature race at least.
