Chase Elliott Sweeps the Snowball Weekend @ 5 Flags Speedway

General

UPDATE: Chase was disqualified for using Tungsten for weight, instead of the normal lead.

A basis on Tungsten - is similar to lead, but is 1.7 times more dense. Basically Chase's car weighed the same as others, but used less weight blocks. Most teams use 20 pound blocks of lead. The blocks used on Elliott's car was 36 lbs per block. Basically, they used less blocks to compensate the same weight as other competitors. The only reason that Tungsten is outlawed at the Snowball Derby is that it cost nearly 10 times more than lead. Track officials want to keep cost down for small teams. That makes sense, but weight is weight no matter what it's weighed down with. Rules are rules though. I'm still very upset with this decision. It was also brought to my attention that the 51 Team (Erik Jones, last year's winner and originally runner up for this year) told tech officials of this infraction.

Chase Elliott Sweeps the Snowball Weekend @ 5 Flags Speedway

General

If you haven't heard, my hometown racing hero, Chase Elliott dominated this weekend in Pensacola!

First off, Chase set a qualifying record for the Pro Late Model race (Snowflake 100) and won that race. He's the only driver with three Snowflake wins, and the first back-to-back.

Next off, driving his Super Late Model, Chase not only sets a Snowball Derby qualifying record, but a new overall TRACK RECORD! In a video I saw of the record lap, he was going so fast into one, he hit the rev limiter in the car. While listening to the broadcast, he led early during the first 75 laps straight, fell to third. But in all reality, he never dipped below 6th during the race. He charged up front and took the win. He's one of only a few to win the famed race more than once, and he also has two victories within three years of that race!

He is also the first driver to win both races in the same weekend!

Truly, a determined racer!

December 4, 1977: Another Waltrip controversy

Stock Car Racing History

I had forgotten about this one! Thanks for posting Chase. I'm good friends with Ronnie Sanders and I love hearing him telling this story! In fact, Ronnie is at the Snowball now, with his late model driver (who I can't remember his name).

Another neat fact is that the car that won the 77' Snowball is on loan to the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame by Sanders, who is a 2009 Inductee. The car was originally built by Pete Hamilton, when he had his stay throughout the 70's in Georgia. The car has a higher rear end than a stock 76/77 Camaro. The way I understand it, is that Hamilton used the back part of a Mopar (Might have been one of those Plymouth Kit Cars) to fabricate the custom rear clip of Ronnie's Camaro.

Changes to Hall of Fame Eligibility Process and Voting

Stock Car Racing History

That's good to a degree. I do see how inducting someone that was/is recently in the spotlight is a good idea. The last few years with Waltrip, Rusty, and now Dale Jarrett, means that they are wanting to induct a former driver that is currently on TV. My pick for the next induction would probably be Ray Evernham - he's a multi-time championship crew chief, car owner and now broadcaster.

I can see Elliott being picked over Mark Martin since Bill is starting to come back into the sportlight with his son's help. I would guess that during Chase's Sprint Cup debut season is the year that Awesome Bill goes into the hall of fame.

That's all well and dandy....but when will Raymond Parks and Red Byron being inducted? As much as I like Bill, I would rather see some of the early guys get in before him.

Forrest Gump's Mom Summed up 2014 Texas Race Schedule (F-1 & NASCAR Cup)

Current NASCAR

Fans of F1, aren't typically fans of NASCAR though, and vise-versa. I don't think it will make a difference, except for traffic maybe?

A Historic Date - November 27th, 1895

Stock Car Racing History

No, that's not supposed to be 1985, or 1995.....on this date inĀ  1895, the first Automobile Race in America was held in Chicago. It was Thanksgiving Day, when 6 cars (four gasoline powered, and the other two by electric) raced 54 miles around the suburbs of Chicago.

A driver named J. Frank Duryea won the race with a record time of 7 Hours & 53 minutes, driving his gasoline powered car.

That was the first of billions of miles of auto-racing in which we all love so much!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Big Rig bobtail racing in 1985

Stock Car Racing History

These truckers were tough! Very cool series for what it was. Here's part 1 of 4 from 1980 in Atlanta. I believe this race was in the opening sequence of Smokey and the Bandit II.

This day in history: November 22, 1981 Riverside International Raceway

Stock Car Racing History

Always loved that Hardee's scheme...whether it was driven by Bobby, or Cale.

And Chase, I know I have seen a picture of RC's car from that day.....I know I have! I thought I saved it to my computer, but I couldn't find it. It'll come up one day.

A NEW DEVELOPMENT DRIVER SPOTTED IN THE PADDOCK AT ATLANTA MOTORSPORTS PARK

Current NASCAR

Hahaha Johnny! Thanks, and as Jeff said the other night, I could retire now and have the best winning percentage, winning my class in my first race. But as you all know, once the racing bug has bitten you good, you just want more. I hope to do this again soon; this was in karts, but who knows, maybe a car next?

So, looks like I'm going have to order some 'hero cards', lol
