Denny Zimmerman, 2nd place finisher in this race won by Steady Eddie Flemke, would go on to become 1971 Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year. Both Zimmerman and heat winner Pete Hamilton were Flemke "students" and it was Flemke who was given credit by Hamilton when he won the Daytona 500 for Petty Enterprises. Flemke ran to win, not for points like one of the multi-time NASCAR modified champs and HOF members in the same field.
