This is a very famous racing roadster flathead from the early 50's that was commonly raced at the old Motor City Speedway in Detroit. Driver was Jack Goodwin, one of Michigan's first superstars. This car was nearly unbeatable and I'm so glad to see it posted here. This is an extremely rare photo of the Ed Beste 15 race car. Make a note of the black pipe roll bar. The men who drove these roadsters were the real men of racing.Pete in Michigan

One additional note from the Michigan Motorsports Hall of Fame, there was a time when Jack Goodwin while driving the Ed Beste raadster never lost a race the car finished... that's 119 wins! I think this might be the car, but I'm not a hundred percent sure.

Thanks for the info, Tom. This car was winning about the time I was born, but I'm going back to find out all I can about Michigan's historic cars. This car was very special. I know Jack Goodwin is still around, is Ed Beste still with us? I also was curious if this car was involved in the accident that nearly took Goodwins life in 1953 at Jackson Motor Speedway. Jack had one of the most amazing recoveries in racing history. Again, thanks for this Tom.

Yeh Pete, Ed's still with us. He live about 1-1/2 miles from me in Fraser, where he's lived for quite some time. He retired some time ago, I'm thinkin' 14-15 years when he sold out Beste's Frame Shop on Gratiot near 7 Mile. The shop is still an ongoing business and still has the same name. The car that Jack wrecked at Jackson was an Indy style car that was owned by Al Singer. Jack drove THE INDY in 1951. The day Jack crashed horribly was his first time out in that car. Yes it was a miraculous recovery that he made. It was experimental surgery at U of M (brain) that saved his life.He left the hospital in THREE days. WOW ! I talked with Jack just this morning and verified the story.
