Curtis Turner Tracks: Mt. Airy Speedway
The story of stock car racing in south-western Virginia actually begins in Mt. Airy, North Carolina. Built in 1946 by Garnett Golding, Mt. Airy Speedway opened in 1946, attracting 9000 spectators on opening day.......a week after a rain-out. Curtis Turner drove his first race here, and finished 18th in a field of 18. Turner won the following week. The faint remains of turns 3 & 4 are barely visible on "Race Track Road" near Mt. Airy, NC.
