Rest in Peace Buck!
Buck was one of the greats......God-Speed, Buck.
I raced against Buck back in the day. Great driver and a great guy. RIP Buck.
Does anyone remember the night at Dixie Speedway in Woodstock GA when Buck and Jody Riddley ran a 10 lap match race to see who would get a ride in Kenny Childress'sBlack Diamond Coal#12 Grand National Carfor thefall Atlanta 500 at the speedway. Buck won and got the ride. As I remember they flipped a coin to see who wouldstart on the inside and the race was on. This had to be in the late 70's or very early 80's. It was while the track was paved. Mike Ashley
RIP Buck ,, Never be forgotten
Sad news! I remember Buck coming to Kingsport Speedway...guess it was int he late 60's seems like it was a gold #41 ford farlane...66 or 67. Then I remember him running in a late model wedge car there in Robert Smalley's NDRA. One heck of a racer. Always put on a great show.
Well, they (Swims) tore up the asphalt in 77', and from then on it was dirt. But from my knowledge, Buck only ran in the Grand National's in 79' and 80'.
Cody, I think you are right, the race in question was done earlier when Buck and Jody raced to see who would drive the #90 Truxmore car at Atlanta and Jody won. Jody started 19th and finished 5th in Junie Donlavey's 1971 Mercury. He later drove several times for Junie before going full time with him.
Buck was driving on dirt for Jimmy's Speedshop in Columbus, GA when he went with the Kenny Childress car for awhile. Childress couldn't seen to find a driver he wanted to stay with long enough to to give them a chance.
I have a photo or two of Jody and Buck racing side by side atsome NASCAR races if I can put my finger on them.
I'm not trying to take anything away from Buck, he was a great driver in anything he sat in. If he had been given a chance he could have made it in NASCAR. Both he and Jody tried to get in too late in their careers. If they had made the move earlier like Bobby Allison they could have made their marks on the series.
