Anybody know where I can find pictures of Junior Johnson's old race shop at Ingle Hollow or any pictures of the Wood Brothers or Holman & Moody.

Mr. Biscoe that's a great idea but I'm afraid I'm not that bold. I grow up about 30 miles from the speedway, but I have no idea where the shop might be, I've tried Google earth but I'm not sure what to landmarks to look for anyway I may take some of my older friends by there one day and see if the place. Thanks for your reply. Billy Biscoe (arustyracer) said:

The shop is here It is the building complex on the left. You should be able to see the famous creek run in between the two main buildings if you zoom in close enough.I have not been to the shop, but would love to someday (kind of hard seeing that I live in central Maryland). But if anyone has any pics/videos of the shop, especially during Junior Johnson & Associates heyday, then I would Love to hear from you.I also know of a recent video from a NASCAR Now segment "Brewers Tour" that was filmed in 2008. It is a short clip, but definitely worth a look. If anyone has any information regarding artifacts or anything from the old Ingle Hollow Shop, please let me know. Thanks Eric Kincaid said:

Eric, if you can get to the old Junior Johnson shop, ask if there is still a picture of Richard Petty taped to the urinal at the shop. Junior disliked Richard and did that according to the ESPN book "Did You Know?.Pete

Sorry. Wasn't able to post the link directing you to his shop. If anyone wants to know, you can google "2300 Somers Road, Ronda NC. That will show you where Junior Johnson & Associates once produced their cars. August Matthew Savarese said:

August, thanks for the link, that is exactly where I thought the shop had been. Pretty neat that it looks so small compared to today's shops given that Junior produced so many winning cars and championships. Thanks EK

Pete, that is news to me. I didn't know that Junior didn't like Richard Petty. I figured they had the general competitive spirit for one another but not to such an extent as you have stated. I wonder who else may have been given the same place of honor as R. Petty was given in the Junior Johnson & Associates restroom. Pete Banchoff said:

Yeah, the pic of Petty above the urinal is famous, but I'm not sure it was there because of a hatred of Richard or Petty Enterprises, but because at the time, they were one of the best. More like a motiviation thing. The shop was plenty big for it's time. But I agree, looking back on it now, along with other shops like Bud Moore's in Spartinsburg, or the Wood Brothers in Stuart, or even Petty Enterprises in Level Cross, it's hard to imagine how they were able to do everything they did. Though I do know that Junior, like many others had his chassis made by Banjo Matthews just a short trip away in Asheville. But those guys, when looking at pics of their old shops, it's what I imagine it would look like. Not these race shops they have today, which is more like a hospital building then anything else. But back to Junior's shop, like I previously mentioned, you can see the famous creek that seperated the original garage and the newer garage built for the #12 car and Niel. DW detested having a teammate, and was one of the reasons he left Junior, among others having a Bud sponsor. But from what I hear, the shop actually now houses a flooring buisiness and a driving school. I believe though that some parts of the shop have been left as is when Junior quit.I still would love to see any pics of the shop, either recent or from the past. A video would be great. Thanks

I grew up in Lenoir which is 32 miles from N. Wilkesboro Speedway. I had heard rumors that sometimes they would actually run the race cars to test a motor out the road by Junior's shop. This rumor was confirmed by Jeff Hammond in an interview that Jeff Gilder did with J. Hammond. Hammond said that they did alot with a whole lot less than most teams. He said they actually shook down the cars on the road out by the shop, I think it is a dead end road. Now wouldn't that get the attention of the neighbors. I all so read a story somewhere a few months ago where Junior explained why he switched to Fords after D.W left. He said that he had sent a carborator to GM and that it didn't come back on time, so he called them and they said they would check on it, he said a few days later it arrived and had been shipped to him from Hendrick Motor Sports, so he figured he couldn't trust GM and switched to Fords because of the carborator ending up at Hendrick. The article says that D.W. was stunned to find out what had actually happended. Pretty neat. Yea, I wish I could find a video or something. I remember in the early 90's that during a race, Neil Bonnett took some ESPN guys into the shop to show where they used to build the cars and what not. A friend of mine visited the shop quite often and he walked all round the woods and stuff and said all kinds of all race cars were sitting around in the woods, mostly wrecked.

Nice to find out why Junior switched to Ford. Always wondered about that. I've also heard many times that they would test out the cars on Ingle Hollow Rd, which is the street behind the old shop. Would have loved to have been there in those days. That Tim Brewer video that I mentioned in my first post was taken from last year I believe. Wish I was able to post the link , but everytime time I try, it never shows up when it goes to post. But the shop had a bunch of parts and things just laying around. Now Junior is running his sons team out of the JKS shop in Welcome using ECR engines for his late model team.

If your talking about that Tim Brewer video, no, I have yet to see it on youtube. Here is a link: http://videos.apnicommunity.com/Video,Item,3114221069.html I have seen on a different site pics of the inside of the shop from I would guess the late 80's judging by the cars. I also have pics of the Wood Brothers original shop, and pics inside Petty Enterprises from the late 70's. I'll see if I can't find them tonight and post them here. Always on the lookout for pics/videos of the places where these famous cars were built. I guess not many people cared about taking photo's/videos back then of those places. Eric Kincaid said:

Eric, thanks for putting this discussion up. I'm learning so much and I hope someday you get the chance to step on the sacred ground where so much history was made. Thanks for why Ford cars were used after GM screwed him with the Carb. I didn't know that!Pete

I was able to watch the video from the ESPN website. Very neat video. The shop looked like most Body Shops of today rather than the elaborate race shops that are common today. Thanks for the link. EK August Matthew Savarese said:

If anyone is interested in seeing old video of Junior Johnson and his shop, please watch the Nascar Hall of Fame video of Junior Johnson on Speed. I believe they are re-airing the episode all week on speed. It has great shots not only of the old garage throughout the years, but also the original house that Junior grew up in. I seriously want to track down the video of that one interview they had of Junior at his old original house. It looked like it was from the late 60's.

Eric, I kinda stumbled on the website with the H-M pictures when I was looking for pictures of Jabe Thomas. As far as Holman Moody, they have a website that I put on below, but I'm not sure what they are doing now, if anything. There was some talk of a Museum, but again I don't know for sure.Check it out. Wasn't that a nice picture of Waddell Wilson working on a crank at H-M back in the day? http://www.holmanmoody.com/history.html

Hi, visited Juniors shop years ago. Stopped at office and receptionist said they were all over at N. Wilksboro for quailfying so I couldnt get a tour but the shops were open so if I wanted to go back and look around I was welcome. Jumped on that offer and had a great time looking. The shops were a bunch of different buildings, body, trans & gears, engine shops, car assy shop. One interesting thing was this was back when he still ran Chevrolets but there were quite a few Ford race engines in the shop & a storeroom. In fact there was one Ford motor on the dyno. HMMM ????? Also as posted earlier there were bits & pieces behind the shops especialy the body shop. I came upon a large pile of bent up sheet metal and one "unique" pile. it was from a white car used in a nostalgia race and driven by Junior. There were many body pieces with "JUNIORS DO NOT TAKE" written on them. Wish I was able to hone in on a year. If you are ever near there its out in the middle of nowhere but a ride well worth it.

Thanks Jeffrey for the neat story. I'll be in the area in Oct. and hopefully I'll visit the old shop. A friend of mine visited the shop in the early '90's and said there were cars sitting out in the woods.

Junior was very smart and had as much to do with Nascar's sucess as Richard did. Just do not see these kind of characters anymore. He put Leroy Yarbrough into the International Morotsports Hall of Fame, brought the Winston brand into racing, won the Daytona 500 and invented many inovations retaling to the cars. I saw him rip the rear bumper off of Cale's car at Dover in the 70's and then watched a fan walk out of the track with it on his shoulders. And oh yeah ......He could drive like hell

If anyone wants to see some great old time footage of Junior and his shop, go download the Junior Johnson Story off ITunes. I HIGHLY recommend this. It's about an hour long, and features footage of Junior back in the mid-60's, and some footage of his shop in the 80's. A great find and a great watch for any NASCAR fan, especially one of Junior Johnson.
