Richard Petty still handn't found the handle on the coil springs in his new 1969 Ford ride when the NASCAR Grand National circuit went to Rockingham, NC for the March 9, 1969 Carolina 500. In the Dozier Mobley photo above for the June 1969 issue of Stock Car Racing Magazine, Petty slides up the track in front of the oncoming cars of
#39 Friday Hassler and
#67 Buddy Arrington. This was the final race for the original "Low banked" Rockingham configuration. Note the double Armco guardrail in the turns. It took 4 hours, 52 minutes to run the last low banked 500 miler at "The Rock."
