"Chief Announcer" Ray Melton
Virginia Beach, Virginia's Ray Melton billed himself as "Chief Announcer" for NASCAR. He held court on the public address system at Darlington for many years and also announced at Daytona, Bristol, Rockingham and Richmond. Ray was known for giving "The Command" to start engines and for his colorful descriptions of drivers and racing action. Ray, a former Marine Sergeant, appeared as himself in the movie "Thunder in Carolina."
