Convertibles to Midgets - Richmond 1958

gallery image
Two months after Gwyn Staley lost his life in Julian Petty's NASCAR Chevy convertible at Richmond on March 23, 1958, it was midgets, not ragtops stirring the dust at the half-mile dirt Virginia State Fairgrounds in May 1958. The spinning driver in the photo, Bill Shockley, hailed not from the northeast, midwest or California, but rather from Greenville, South Carolina - heart of stock car racing country!
