Stock Car Racing History
i feel a special kinship to this man as his first grand national race was my first grand national race. he was part of the backbone of the sport and will be missed.

I wish him well too. Clay is a good guy and has done a ton for our local short track guys. Just aways concerned when a new guy goes to Talladega.
Really unsure about this one. Has Clay even raced on a superspeedway before ? I don't recall him ever being an entrant on any track bigger than a half-mile.
hmm. seems like we had similar woes back during the carter administration. a lot of us have forgotten those years when there were only a handful of cars capable of winning most weeks. many races were decided by laps and not seconds. imagine how THAT would play out now in the land of quick attention span.fact is the show will go on and find a way to survive until a new golden age comes around.
what's the deal with stuff going wrong at bruton smith speedways ? in the past we've had the toilets fail, a walking bridge fall, track surface problems, track access problems, and others. now there's a problem with the lights. sometimes i feel like i'm gonna be watching a race at one of his tracks and the grandstands are gonna cave in.
On a totally unrelated subject, when did they take that crossover bridge, shown in the photo, down ?
Iremember as a kid reading those encouraging articles and how sad it was when the Fireball took a turn for the worse. To me, his death was every bit as tragic as was Dale Earnhardt's.
of the car in question, when i zoom in on the subject, the rear looks different from the zoom shown earlier. on that zoom it looks like a 58 and on my zoom it looks like a 57 down to the detail of the rear quarter panels. so i agree with pkl for a change.. lol
as for bob said, i know he was onan olympic bobsled team and i believe he drove in some sports car races.
i would agree with the assessment that the car is the no. 36 based on observation of a small portion of the front no.
as for bob harkey, he is mostly known as an indy or champcar driver. he once spoke at our high school and there was a film shown with one of the indy 500's that he ran.
After seeing SPEED's version of the top ten 500's ( which was a joke ) , I've decided to submit my list of the ten worst in no particular order.
1964 The King wins by two laps
1972 A.J. wins by two laps
