Open Air at Bristol

Current NASCAR

Johnny, I didn't get to watch much of the race or hear those "clowns" on Fox. I got so turned off by the Cousin Carl slap on the wrist from Atlanta that I found better things to do on race day. If there is something in the air for changes in Cup I'm not aware. There needs to be sweeping changes starting at the top. I don't know what bar these decision makers are at when decisions are made, but it's probably written on a cocktail napkin with another round on the way.The comment by Ernest about Brian not being cut from the same mold as Big Bill or Bill Jr. is right on! Big Bill had family working in the field instead of sitting in the Ivory Tower trying to anticipate what racing should be. Maybe Brian should have taken tickets, sold programs, parked cars or sat in the Grandstands to learn what the fans are looking for like his Dad did.Eric made a great point about Bristol. Race fans have always attended races there in numbers and the night race may tell what is really going on. Many tracks have been on the decline for butts in the seats...except Bristol and a very few other tracks. Now, who knows. We all know what happens when attendance plummets at a local track, you either get the people back or turn it into a shopping mall/parking lot or it becomes a Ghost Track for Bobby to talk about on Racers Reunion radio.Pete

Open Air at Bristol

Current NASCAR

Johnny, I watched only a small part of the race, but Nascar racing at the Cup level is in turmoil. It's so bad that the hole Brian France and his ass-ociates have dug is too deep to climb out of. This is almost a burn it to the ground and start over situation. I don't know how you fix it now, Johnny. I thought I had some ideas but without the crowd showing up on race day it will hurt Cup racing bad. Nascar has made bad decision after bad decision and fans are tired of it. Why pad the pockets of these guys with hard earned money when they have no clue what they're doing.I mentioned in a previous discussion that Bristol is the shining star as far as sellouts and track attendance. They were hurt...imagine what the crowd will look like for Michigan, Indianapolis, Chicago, Pocono and other midwest tracks. Nascar and track officials will be the only fans in the stands.Just my opinion.Pete

Open seats at Bristol

General

Yes, Bristol is the one track with great attendance. Might be a slow year for seat sales at the tracks if Bristol is the benchmark.Pete

Engine builder Tommy Turner

Stock Car Racing History

Richard and Charles, thanks for the replies! I'm still looking for the article that I think was written up in one of the Michigan International Speedway programs about the Wood Brothers. Each member of the team was talked about and at the very end was a "last but not least" member of the team, Tommy Turner. From what I remember he was the engine builder and did the work at Holman-Moody. He also rarely attended a race if my memory serves me correctly. I remember that there was a Competition Proven by Holman Moody decal on the hood of the 21 car up until I think Neil Bonnett as driver. I always thought that odd because I thought H/M were long gone at that point. I was obviously wrong!Richard, thanks for letting me know about his qualifying engines and Charles anything you can share about his career I would really appreciate. I always had a soft spot in my heart for engine builders and the demands that these great drivers put on them.Pete

Engine builder Tommy Turner

Stock Car Racing History

I remember reading many years ago about an engine builder at Holman-Moody named Tommy Turner. I believe at the time he was building engines for the Wood Brothers out of the H/M shop and would like to know more about his career. Does anyone have memories about this little known builder who made the Wood Bros very quick on the race track?

This may just help attendance for Nascar

Current NASCAR

Hey Johnny, I see Larry Mac and Hammond are pronouncing Brad's name right. The others, forget it!Pete in Kes-el-owski country.

Yup Johnny, I think the announcers on these racing shows can't pronounce anything over 3 syllables, Keselowski is 4.LOL. I agree that Brad has a strong cage and I don't see any driver now that can rattle it. If anyone can shake him it might be Roger Penske, but I think he'll guide Brad, not dictate driving.

Johnny, a Keselowski won't back down. I watched Brad's Uncle Ron and Dad Bob race and if Brad follows in their footsteps, if he gets pushed he will push back. As far as retaliation, we'll see in the next couple of races. He won't change his driving style. Also, I 'm getting really irritated with the pronunciation of Brad's last name. Please tell the brilliant announcers it's Kes-el-owski not Kezlowski. Man, guys, get it right...it's not that tough!Pete in Michigan
