General

Glen Jarrett also drove for Marvin Thackston in the Busch Series and may be of some help. He is currently doing some broadcasts for MRN Radio.

Mike Porter

General

Sad to hear of this. Our thoughts and prayers go out ot the family. Knew Mike from covering races in the Va-NC area. I remember his black and silver no.3. He won at Martinville and put the car on the pole at Daytona. Was always a nice fellow to talk to. Allways gave some good quotes and I have several photos I took of him. He raced because he loved it and worked hard.

wilkesboro vs. martinsville

General

In my opinion the races draw a different fan base and are in different markets. More than likely, no one from the Wilkes area is going to a Late Model race at Martinsville and vice-versa, no one around the Martinsville area is going to Wilkes, except for a small group of modified loyalists who follow the drivers, or a small group who may know a participant. Plus North Wilkesboro is only 45 minutes from here and there has been no advertising around here (Mooresville) and Martinsville does not advertise the Late Models very much except in the local area.As far as previous conflicts, the Martinsville doubleheader also ran the same day as the Rockingham Cup race on two occasions that I remember because of weather. The NHRA also ran in Bristol the same weekend as the All-Star race at Charlotte. Both SMI tracks, but different markets and different fan base. The fact is that the market does not bear drawing from a wide range for the type event being held. Some fans may have to pick and choose but the majority do not have a conflict. The weak economy does not help matters in that race fans may not travel as far, or may save their dollars for the larger and/or Cup races, so the speedways depend more on the area fans for support. As far as North Wilkesboro and Martinsville, neither will probably draw very well, unfortunately.

The Rumble of Dust

Stock Car Racing History

What a great day this was. It was my first experience at this festival. Great to see old friends and racers and meet some ones.I have to ditto everything that has been said about the Historic Speedway Group. Everyone was friendly and professional. They are a hard working group. My hat's off to you. Thanks to everyone who came out to support them. The feeling of walking into those woods and seeing and hearing what I did was very memorable and at times kind of emotional. What a great experience for anyone who has an interest in racing whether you are a racer, worked in the business, or a fan.

Tommy Ellis Prison Sentence

Current NASCAR

I had heard that he tried to sell his car wash business to an undercover cop and showed him a second set of accounting books. Don't know 100% if that is the story or not. Can you shed some light on this Dave?

New sites....?

General

Hey Jeff, I think Local and Vintage are very appropriate names. Simple and tells what they are for. Done deal. I believe there is a real market out there for vintage racers, and a new market for local racers to join and highlight their accomplishments and find local racing results.

Help Identify The Track & Drivers In These Old Photos

Historic Speedways and Ghost Tracks

Hey Robert, the Peace Haven photo showing the wreck and sign boards on the backstrech you have here was edited and used on a Greensboro Fairgrounds program cover. I thought I recognizedit. I have the program cover on my photo page.

Just as an FYI, the wreck was part of a 12-car pile up during an amatuer race at Peace Haven that stopped the race.

Ghost Track Update: Raleigh Speedway

General

When was the speedway first built? I am under the impression that this was the old Southland Speedway before it became Raleigh Speedway. Please let me know if I am wrong. I have several programs from there, and one of the July 4th major races lists James Chestnut as one of the promoters along with Bill France.

Pray for Larry Pearson

General

Hey Angie. I have tried to follow up with all the racing news-worthy sites and can only get what we already know. He was alert and had regained conciousness and was transported.I have known these guys for 25 years and used to be a public relations representative with Chattanoga Chew when Larry was driving. I wish I had a number to the family as I too would love to know something. If I hear of anything I wll let you know and please do the same for me. Thanks and prayers always do work. - N.B.
