Jimmy Scott

Stock Car Racing History

I think you can add Morgan Sheppard, Buddy Baker and possibly Tommy Ellis to the list of drivers. Jimmy and Tommy were best of friends and I'm not sure if Tommy ever drove the car in competition or not but I think he did.

For those who may not be familiar with anything but the sound, the original motor in the car was a one off hand built 348 cubic inch Chevrolet motor that Jimmy spent countless hours building. That motor had 2 distributors, 16 spark plugs, highly modified heads mated to an AMC intake with 180 degree headers breathing thru a Z-11/Myster Motor breather and cold air intake system connected to the firewall.

Jimmy was my neighbor in those days back in Amelia and he was quite a guy and highly thought of by all. He was one of my best friends. Our race car shops were just a block apart and many nights after we would quit work on the cars we would all go to Buddies Truck Stop for a late night snack. I remember being at Jimmy's shop late one night when he was assembling that motor, there was the usual group of guys hanging around and Jimmy had the motor on the stand turned upsidedown and one of the guys got a little too close and had about an inch of ashes hanging off the end of his cigarette and Jimmy told him to get away from his motor before those ashes fell off. The guy (I don't remember now who it was) replied to Jimmy that the ashes were so fine that the wouldn't hurt the motor. Jimmy replied, "show me how they will make it go faster and I'll pay you by the pound to stand there and smoke and drop them in it" !!! Aw, the good days. Thanks for remembering Jimmy

Stock Car Racing History

I remember that race well, I was working for Worth McMillion then, they took the cars outside the race track and parked them inside the old round brick building that was used for livestock during the state fair. We went back Monday afternoon and it was so dark inside the building, you couldn't see anything in that big buildingand we couldn't find the cars!! I guess there was electricity in the building but it wasn't on. Had to get flash lights to find the cars. Things have changed somewhat in the past 50 years!!!

Yeah, I never had a drivers uniform. Oh, I forgot about the Bobby Allison deal with the scores stand.....my wife was in that scorers stand also. She told me after the race that she had no idea where anybody finished. She said clip boards went flying in the air!!!

Here are a few more, these were taken before and during the Richmond race on May 15th, 1966. Worth drove the # 80 '64 Pontiac and I drove the # 83 '65 Pontiac that day. He finished 10th and I finished 12th.

One photo was taken before the race of me with the '65, another was taken waiting to qualify, that's Curtis Turner in Smokey's '65 Chevrolet behind me. Look at the detail in that photo, reck'n the MRN guys could deal with that kind of radio equipment? LOL

The other photo is Worth during the race in the 80 car beside Turner

Of course, you, yourself, G.T. wheeled that #80 Pontiac Frank recalls numerous times.

I did, I don't want to distract anything from Worth at a time when he is getting some recognition but he let me drive the car quite a bit during the 65, 66, 67 time frame. Sometimes he drove the '64 and I drove the '65 and sometimes the other way around, just depended on which motor was in which car. Worth was my hero and still is. My Dad was theABC officer in Amelia and when he had a stoke and retired in1960 Worth got his job. I was a 19 year old kid helping Worth in the shop andwhen I turned 21he let me start driving thecar some. To this day I don't know why he did it but I will always be indebted to him. He taught me everything I know (which isn't a lot!!) and he gave me a chance to do something that very few people have ever had the chance todo and that's drive a race car in the GN division.

I am so happy to see Worth get a little recognition. I onlywish he was able to be at the show. I have a couple of photos of the car to add, one of the photos shows the car at Martinsville in the fall of '68. I believe this may have been the last race the car was run in. It has the yellow paint scheme with no sponsor. The other photo was taken when the car was new, in the infieldof the old Fairgrounds Raceway at Strawberry Hill, now RIR. The car was originally white with red lettering.Look closely at this photo, wonder how many people remember the old Oak tree that stood in the third turn of the infield??Brings back lots of memories

Oh yeah, that's Larry Manning in the 66 Chevrolet

Stock Car Racing History

Thanks to Ray Lamm for posting the photos and for remembering Worth. To answer your question concerning the car, it was originally white with red numbers and black shadowing. Bruaer Pontiac was also written in red. I don't know who did that sheet of decals but it's spot on. Later (I think 1967) the car was painted a pale yellow and the numbers were black. There was no sponsor on the quarters after that. The yellow paint may have faded to look white by now. The car really was never ran that much, I think the first race for the car was the fall 1965Rockingham race then it was run right much in '66 and some in '67. Worth also had a second car during this time, number 80, a '64 Pontiac. The car as seen in the photos is afterit was changed over to a'66.This is asit wasat it'slast race which was Richmond, I beleive the Spring of '68. GN cars were allowed to race for 3years.The last race that the car ran in was Hillsboro in the fall of '67 but during the winter an attempt was made to convert the car to a '66 so that it could be run another year. NASCAR officals didn't go forit and they didn't let him run it.
